Wintertime in Colorado is so magical that we rarely use our non-revenue flight privileges to go anywhere else. Speaking of magical, in December, Keystone Resort invited us to the Annual Kick-off of Kidtopia!

Bigger than ever this year, Kidtopia is a festival of fun-filled activities designed just for kids, but that the whole family can enjoy too. TMOM disclosure graphicWith activities scheduled all week long from December to April, be sure to check the Kidtopia Schedule to make the most of your visit to Keystone.

World’s Largest Snow Fort

Every year Keystone’s master ice sculptors build the world’s LARGEST snow fort atop of Dercum Mountain. There are slides, a maze and endless photo opportunities for you and the kids. We never consider winter complete until we’ve explored the snow fort, usually as part of a weekend of skiing and riding, but non-skiers/riders can visit via the enclosed River Run Gondola from the base of Keystone as well.

Snow-Tubing at Adventure Point

Also at the top of Dercum Mountain is Keystone’s exciting, six-lane snow-tubing hill, complete with a state-of-the-art conveyor belt to get you back up to the top quickly and without any huffing and puffing. Tubing sessions are an hour long and $32 per person. Because of the speed of the conveyor belt, you can expect to get in 5-6 runs in one hour. Hours are extended during night-skiing and Thursday nights are reserved for Disco Tubing!

Ripperoo Parade

On Saturdays at 4pm, while enjoying your cookie at Dercum Square Ice Rink, you’ll also be treated to Ripperoo’s Village Parade, which starts at Ripperoo’s Ski and Ride School, then makes its way through River Run Village and ends at the ice rink for complimentary cookies and cocoa. Led by Ripperoo himself, kids can be part of the parade by riding in the parade’s horse-drawn float or dance along with the Keystone parade performers.

Kidtopia Headquarters

For an alternative to a day on the slopes, there’s Kidtopia Headquarters located next to Dercum Ice Rink in Dercum Square, where kids can enjoy face-painting, games, coloring or canvas and pottery painting at Ready Paint Fire! Kidtopia Headquarters also hosts regular Monday Talent Shows and Thursday Matinee Movies.

Kidtopia Fireworks

Every Saturday night at 7pm, fireworks light up the sky over Dercum Mountain! Viewable from both Lakeside Village and River Run Village, the free fireworks show is just one of the things that make Keystone unique among Colorado ski resorts and also one of the most kid and family-friendly. We chose to watch the show from the hot tub at our River Run condo. Located next to River Run Village and near the base of Dercum Mountain, convenience is just one of the things that makes staying at River Run Condos worth checking out.

Ripperoo’s Ski and Ride School

As a 2012 graduate of Ripperoo’s Ski and Ride School, our daughter, Reagan has fond memories of skiing through Ripperoo Forest with her classmates, graduating to skiing on her own and now rips down the mountain on skis faster than her parents can keep up with her. So, on this recent visit to Keystone, she had a morning of one-on-one instruction to improve on her technique and control her speed. This also meant that Mom and Dad got a rare morning on the mountain to themselves – and we made the most of it! After we had our own fun exploring Dercum Mountain and North Peak by snowboard, we met up with Reagan and her Ski and Ride School instructor to get the skinny on how she did and what she still needed to work on. We noticed a marked improvement in Reagan’s turns and her focus afterward as we all enjoyed the mountain together. We have Keystone to thank for making learning to ski such a fun experience and getting Reagan to where she feels confident and capable on all forms of terrain including places Mom and Dad don’t even go, namely Black Diamond moguls!

Thanks, Keystone!
