TSL outsideMy husband and I went away for the weekend for our 10th Anniversary.  I wanted a quiet, relaxed pace for our weekend away from our kids.  My mom was flying in to babysit: we had to maximize our time together, but not get too bogged down in activities.  I love my kids, but I didn’t want to think about them.  This vacation was meant to be about me and my husband.

Choosing Teton Springs Lodge & Spa in Victor, Idaho — the quieter side of the Tetons — revealed itself as a spectacular choice.  Luxury, remote, but with enough activities and good food to keep us wanting more, while still relaxed.

A well-trained staff checked us into our gorgeous suite — the place was huge!  Two bathrooms, king size bed, and murphy bed in the outer room.  When we go back with our kids — the fully-equipped kitchen will make our lives a lot easier.  (Right: stop thinking about the kids.)  We chose the side of the hotel to watch the sunsets (early risers, we ain’t), but I think that even though we would miss most sunrises, we should choose the sunrise side next time as the morning light is incredible — even if you don’t get  a first glimpse.

There was an incredible selection of activities — even if you’re not the most outdoorsy person.  We ended up on a moderate and beautiful hike in the pass between Victor and Jackson, WY.  But we could have gone fly fishing, horseback riding, mountain biking or played tennis or golf.

poolAs we were checking out the pool and jacuzzi, we met Lisa Batchen who told us about the kids club at the resort.  For a very fair price, your kids would do all sorts of activities from 8:30am to 4pm: Swimming, tennis, gymnastics, arts and crafts…  I want to be a kid under Lisa’s tutelage; this woman is fun on first site.  This was the first year that they had a kids’ club and it was a smashing success.  There will be summer and winter kids’ clubs.  Dammit!  Still focusing on my kids…

houseforrentWhile we were taking a tour of the property, we got to see a house that was for sale as well as available for rentals: 5 bedrooms, 5 baths, brand-new, room to sprawl — we could take the kids and maybe even two other families — it was a deal, even in high season.  Right.  Time for me and my massage…

spa-tranquility copyWhen my husband and I got to the spa, we were more than ready for our massages.  Sipping our tea in the quiet room, we decided not to have the double room for our massage.  (Tenth anniversary, not honeymoon)  When we returned to each other an hour later, we each had blissed out smiles on our faces — each woman had a great touch and we felt stress-free and blissed-out. Since TSL has the only spa on this side of the Tetons, they get talented masseuses and have little turnover. My masseuse has been working there for four years…

TSL Breakfast-2Although we went to dinner in the town of Victor, we could have rolled out of our stupor into the Headwaters Grille — the cozy, on site restaurant where we did end up having breakfast.  Very straightforward: eggs, bacon, pancakes, oatmeal, fruit — and it was nice not to have to get in a car.

I’ve read in Trip Advisor glowing reviews about Teton Springs, but some said the beds were too hard.  Too hard?  The beds were luxurious and perfect!  In fact, on our last day there, because I had such an amazing night’s sleep and in an effort to squeeze out as many activities as we could, I took an exercise class given by the aforementioned Lisa Batchen.  I’m not an exercise class kind of person, but again, Lisa seemed too fun to turn down.  Core and cardio — so as not to seem like the weakest link in the class, I brought it — all my energy, focus and strength.  Lots of exercises to get you strengthened for ski season.  It was truly a fun class.  Took my mind off of the strain to keep up…

teton-valley-golfWhile I was coughing up a lung, my husband was hitting a bucket of balls at the driving range.  Although he didn’t play even 9 holes, just being outside at the perimeter of this stunning, Byron Nelson-designed Headwaters Course was a treat for both of us.  I staggered to a bench to watch him after my class — just happy to be sitting and taking in the expanse and… no one telling me there were only two more minutes of lunges…

Would I go back with my kids?  Most definitely.  Would I go back alone with my husband?  Preferably.  But when I do go with the kids, I’ll know that there are options for them that introduce them to new activities and challenges while I can do the (list of) things I want to do.
