On the hunt for some Christmas light displays in California? Look no further than Los Gatos. For the last 15 years, Vasona Lake County Park has played host to Fantasy of Lights-a drive-thru-only Christmas light display taking place November 29-December 31, 2013 every night from 6-10pm.

It’s the sort of homegrown local holiday attraction that has snowballed into an annual tradition for many California families. I know this because the line to get into the Santa Clara County Park wound around the side streets for several miles. Thankfully, I had packed plenty of snacks and activities to keep whining to a minimum. You will want to do the same.

Tip: Avoid a long line by arriving around 5:45 (Fantasy of Lights is from 6-10 p.m. nightly) and weeknights tend to be less crowded.

Fantasy of Lights is sponsored by local churches, businesses and media partners so the cost is a mere $10 per carload.

Admission includes a display map, coupons to local businesses and one pair of Holospex Viewers 3D glasses that add patterns of candy canes when viewing the Christmas lights through the glasses.

Tip: They only give you one pair of Holospex Viewers so ask for another pair to avoid fighting in the back seat.

The 10-20 minute (depending on how fast you are going) drive-thru features 50 different displays including: a tunnel of lights, an 80-foot Christmas tree, a pirate ship and cannon, and — our family fave — the dinosaur den. Yes, dinosaurs complete with sound effects. Wonderfully kitsch.
