Phoenix, Arizona, is a hot spot for vacationers. But in the summer, it’s literally a hot spot as temps can get upwards of 120 degrees. That is is why even high-end resorts and hotels like Fairmont Scottsdale Princess lure people in with amazing deals. And that’s a win-win for Phoenician staycationers like me!

On a whim, my (almost) 4-year-old son, Mateo, and our dog Jeter (yes, it’s dog friendly—more on that later) checked in at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess. I can only describe it as magic. It’s a AAA Five Diamond resort so I don’t have to tell you that the grounds are beautiful, the accommodations are impeccable, and the service can’t be rivaled. But for Mateo, fancy doesn’t equal fun. Fun equals fun.  I’m happy to report – we had fun!

Phoenix in the Summer – Pools Required

With six pools to choose from –where do we even begin? We grabbed our SPF and floaties and hit the Sonoran Splash pool, which was made for kids. It was a party!  Organized games, water slides, cabanas, and the yummiest Pina Coladas kept us happy and hydrated for most of the afternoon.

Mateo’s usual bedtime of 8PM had to be amended because there was a Techno Glo Pool Party that could not be missed. The lasers, fog, strobe lights, and techno beats by DJ Splash has ruined us forever for our usual run-of-the-mill night swims at home. This night swimming pool party happens only during the summer – and it was a blast.  And don’t let the idea of ‘umph umph’ techno music scare you away. It is very kid friendly.

We toyed with the idea of hitting up the dive-in movie because who doesn’t want to watch a movie on the big screen while floating on a giant inflatable flamingo? But Mateo was too eager to watch the fireworks from our room, which you can see on Saturday nights also throughout the summer.

Phoenix in the Summer – Go to the Beach!

After an amazing night of sleep and feeling re-energized, Mateo and I had a few more hours to enjoy at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess. Sunset Beach was our final stop on our 24 hour whirlwind staycation. It was a great way to go out.

I know what you’re thinking—“beach in the desert? I don’t think so.”  Well, 830 tons of sand hauled in from the beaches of Florida that surround this pool will tell you otherwise!  So we played in the sand, shared a virgin Pina Colada (it was so good I had to confirm it was indeed virgin!), and bought a $3 beach ball two times too big for Mateo at the pool side gift shop, and played.

We were both equally entertained by the Mermaid University that was happening in a roped off section of the pool. Yes, I said Mermaid University taught by the real life resident mermaid—her name is Moon, obvi! Little mermaids-in-training swam around us with their mermaid tales creating just a little more magic to our already magical day.

The Mermaid University costs about a hundred bucks. It includes a 90 minute session, mermaid tail, goggles, and Mermaid University diploma.

Working on that Mother of The Year application? I mean, enrolling your kid in something like this  certainly give you an edge.

Phoenix in the Summer – On Dry Land

Come dinner time, my sweet Mateo and I washed up and enjoyed a walk to the La Hacienda by Richard Sandoval Mexican restaurant. When was the last time you enjoyed a date night dinner with your Little; like with table linens and white cloth napkins? I know it sounds scary, but we had the sweetest time and the food was incredible.  We especially enjoyed the churros and decadent dipping sauces.

Our dog Jeter greeted us as at our hotel door after a day of having his own pampering –or pup pampering, as it were. As I mentioned, the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess is very dog friendly—so friendly, in fact, that is has  its own dog ambassadors, Gibb and Bixby.

Upon arrival, there was a plush dog bed, a rawhide bone treat, a toy, and silver water and food bowls waiting for him in our room. The times that we took Jeter for a walk around the grounds, folks’ faces lit up. There’s something about a dog wagging his tail and sauntering along that really puts people in a good mood.

Phoenix in the Summer – July 4th

The  4th of July Freedom Fest at Fairmont Scottsdale Princess is gonna be epic. And if the idea of Phoenix is the summer is still too cray for you – how about a winter wonderland in the 80 degree dessert in the dead of winter? The Fairmont Scottsdale Princess gives the North Pole a run for its money with Christmas at the Princess.  But I digress –that whole festival deserves a blog post of its own so stand by for that.

Finally, the Fairmont Princess is celebrating its 30th birthday, with great deals on rooms for the summer. But let me be straight with you –Phoenix in the dead of summer is freakin’ hot! But who cares when you’re sipping on a margarita in one of the Fairmont’s many pools – with views of the Sonoran desert, with your favorite people in the world at almost half the price you’d pay during high season, am I right?
