Fairhope, Alabama has been bombed. Yarn bombed that is. What is yarn bombing you ask? In essence its basically removable graffiti. A new form of street art. This community art project known as Art on a Limb is drawing attention to my lovely hometown. Many are flocking to the streets to enjoy this already eclectic southern destination.
The Art of Yarn Bombing
The near-forgotten art of knitting has taken to the streets with great force. This funky form of art, also referred to as “urban knitting,”, is invading the streets with its colorful sense of humor. This inoffensive graffiti can be found on the streets of Madrid, Paris, Bali, New York, and now the small town of Fairhope, Alabama.
Where is Fairhope you ask? This small Alabama town located on the Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay has been named “Best Small Southern Town” by Southern Living Magazine; one of the “Top 25 Places to Retire” by CNN Money; and one of “America’s Happiest Seaside Towns” in 2016 by Coastal Living. It is definitely worth your while to come pay us a visit and see why I choose to call this place home.
Art on a Limb
Art on a Limb, the community project hosted by the Eastern Shore Art Center, is responsible for the yarn explosion. Over 40 teams of volunteers consisting of local organizations, schools and businesses participated in the “bombing” of the City. Beautiful artwork now lines the downtown streets. From mermaids, jellyfish, pirates, alligators, octopus and more. The entire family will enjoy strolling through town and soaking up the creativity.
Stop by the Eastern Shore Art Center when you arrive for a tree map, or downloaded one here. The maps will lead you to each piece of art as well as detail the team behind its creative force.
I recommend touring in the evening when the temperatures are cooler and you can dine in one of our fabulous downtown restaurants. Dragonfly Foodbar serves the best tacos in the State of Alabama, according to Yelp. Another great choice, R. Bistro & Pastry, is one of the highest rated restaurants in the state serving their homemade crawfish gravy.
Do you have tweens and teens that might not find this entertaining? Have no fear – Fairhope is a Pokemon Go hotspot. My daughter and I spent an hour walking through town looking at the trees together and she never complained once.
