I have admired the artwork by the Spanish artist Salvador Dalí for years. But I never had the chance to see the works in person. So, while planning a romantic getaway for my husband and me to St. Petersburg, Florida, I made it my mission to make time to visit the Salvador Dali Museum. It was an awesome experience to finally get to see his work in person.

To me, Salvador Dali one of the most talented artists that ever lived. It has been one of my dreams for a long time to be able to see his work displayed in front of me. I have been dreaming of it for years.

I was finally able to fulfill that dream on a recent trip to St. Petersburg, Florida when I went for a visit to the Salvador Dali Museum. In this place you can enjoy looking at 96 of his oil paintings, many original drawings, book works, prints, sculpture, photos, manuscripts, and an extensive archive of documents.

This isn’t the sort of thing that I normally get to do when I travel with my family. I decided to take advantage of the fact that our visit to St. Petersburg was going to be a romantic getaway for my husband and me. I ended up turning this visit into a fun and interesting date for us.

The museum has three floors. On the first one you find the store, a café and a theater. This was where we spent some time after touring the building.

The library is located on the second floor. This is the place where scholars of Dali and other avant-garde artists will do research. The library is extensive and also houses the museum’s administrative offices.

The third floor was where I truly had fun! The galleries are located there. It was very entertaining to spend hours walk around, enjoying the artwork from this genius!

Salvador Dali Museum – What It Is About

  • The Dali Museum Collection has works from his entire career (1904-1989).
  • The building was designed by architect Yann Weymouth and is an artwork in itself.
  • It has a glass bubble known as enigma, made up of 1,062 pieces of glass. This is as homage to the dome at Dali’s museum in Spain.
  • There is also a photo exhibit of his life.

The Collectors: The Main Reason This Museum Exists

  • The museum centers around the works collected by Reynolds and Eleanor Morse.
  • In 1942, the Morses visited a traveling Dali retrospective at the Cleveland Museum of Art and became fascinated with the artist’s work.
  • On April 13, 1943, the Morses met Salvador Dali and his wife Gala in New York.
  • That event started a long, rich friendship, with the Morses regularly visiting the Dali villa in Port Lligat, Spain.

Who Was Salvador Dali?

  • Salvador Dali is one of the most celebrated artists of all time.
  • He was born on May 11, 1904 in Figueras Spain.
  • Dali spent his childhood and early adolescence in Catalonia.
  • In 1925 he had his first solo exhibition in Barcelona.
  • After becoming a prominent figure of the Surrealist movement, he was nearly expelled after a “trial” in 1934 due to differences in political stances.
  • In 1939 he was expelled from Surrealism.
  • Dali and Gala (his wife) spent the better part of the 1940s in America after fleeing WWII.
  • During his stay in the US he teamed up with Alfred Hitchcock to create sequences for Spellbound and was even hired by Walt Disney to complete the art and storyboards for the film Destino.
  • Salvador Dali went through a classical phase throughout the 1950s.
  • During that time he created nineteen large canvases characterized by meticulously detailed images of religious, historical and scientific themes.
  • Gala was always his greatest muse and inspiration and her face is depicted in the majority of his art works.
  • In the 60’s he was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Isabella the Catholic, one of Spain’s highest distinctions.
  • In 1984, Dali was severely injured in a house fire at his Pubol castle and was confined to a wheelchair for the remainder of his life.
  • He then moved to Teatro-Museo where he died of heart failure on January 23, 1989 at the age of 84.
  • In 1990, his estate was split between Madrid and Catalonia, and many prominent exhibitions of the artist’s work continued to show throughout the world.
