When you get to the Florida Keys chances are you will do two things: eat at fun seafood restaurants and to visit all the historical hang outs like Sloppy Joe’s and Captain Tony’s or anything Ernest Hemingway.
The latter restaurants and bars are perfect if you are looking to be part of the local nighttime partying scene. The best way to spend an afternoon is to visit seafood joints on the water.
Tons of restaurants came up while searching for restaurants in Key West, but one stood out from the rest. When I say “the rest” I am talking about what the Conch Republic’s locals rave about. Hogfish Bar and Grill kept popping out on all my searches through blogs and websites.
Why Hogfish Bar and Grill is Different Than Most Restaurants
What makes Hogfish Bar and Grill a favorite among locals? It is what the original lower Keys restaurants were in the days of the fishing towns, way before the tourists arrived.
Hogfish is on Stock Island, near to the ex- headquarters of the Bay of Pigs operation. During peaceful times it was also the place where the Cuban ferry used to dock. It is one of those restaurants that you don’t simply walk over to, you have to know it is here to find it.
And once you arrive, you are so glad you did.
We visited Hogfish as part of our mini, way-overdo honeymoon on board of a Harley Davidson.It was a great experience from the beginning. The hostess greeted us as old friends. We sat in the main dining area. The place was filled with couples and families enjoying great food.
We like to try the specials of each restaurant that we visit.
In this case we didn’t get tons of different dishes, we got sample platters instead. I loved to get a taste of all the yummy goodness.
The platter came with stuffed shrimp, coconut shrimp, conch fritters, crispy HogFish fingers, and steamed shrimps. There was also an option for lovers of spicy food: buffalo shrimp with blue cheese sauce.

You can’t come to Hogfish Restaurant and not order their original Sandwich.
The best part was that we were able to start our meal with Conch chowder that they serve on Fridays. It was a windy day and I was cold from riding the motorcycle so it was perfect. This was a special treat for me because I had never eaten anything Conch.
The owner, Bobby, is one of those guys that becomes your best bud instantly. We met him during our lunch and it made the experience a lot better. He gave us the dirt on all the things that were happening in his neck of the woods – Key West. We also were introduced to some of his staff. It is easy to tell that they are not just employees but are part of his family.
Our experience at Hogfish Bar and Grill was a lot more than having lunch at a seafood restaurant. We left the restaurant feeling almost as part of this community.

It might not be within walking distance from Key West but it is definitely a must visit. It is opened all day long but the best time is sunset.
