Southern cuisine with a flair and a chic, southern atmosphere to compliment it. That’s how I describe the newly opened Crooked Tree Cafe in Marietta, Georgia, located 30 minutes from downtown Atlanta. Oh, and comfortable – both the food and the dining space to enjoy it. It was so comfortable that two friends and I recently spent nearly three hours there chatting, and of course noshing on a large sampling of The Crooked Tree’s unique menu.
Chef Jeff Returns to His Roots
Chef Jeff Haeger, owner and operator, of The Crooked Tree, sharpened his culinary skills throughout the south working in several states spanning from South Carolina to Mississippi and Texas. He’s settled back in his hometown, Marietta, to share his take on some of the southern classics like Slow Smoked Pork, Yardbird Chicken and Southern Style Poutine.
Before opening his cafe in Smyrna, Georgia, and relocating to Marietta, Chef Jeff also worked in several well known Atlanta restaurants, including Soho and Canoe.
While we were there we had the opportunity to hear straight from the chef himself about several of his signature dishes including The Chicken Sandwich and the 1/4 Chicken Plate – Sweet Tea Brined Springer Mountain Chicken, Alabama Style Ivory BBQ Sauce, Mashed Potatoes and Poblano Slaw. He spends three days prepping the chicken. Three days.
I’m already planning a trip back to The Crooked Tree because somehow I managed to miss tasting the chicken. I can tell you firsthand that The Crooked Tree Burger was one of the juiciest, most flavorful burgers I’ve had. And, I love a good burger – especially after a long race. His version includes two hand-pattied burgers, American cheese, caramelized onions on a toasted bun with your choice of a side. It was hard to choose from the eight options listed on the menu including mac & cheese, house cut fries, poblano cider slaw and BBQ spiced broccoli, but I was more than pleased with my pick – the bacon potato salad.
Other honorable mentions from the menu include the Southern Style Poutine – “mess” house cut French fries, smoked chicken gravy, cheddar cheese, herbs; the Slow Smoked Pork – 12-hour smoked pork, toasted bun, Crooked Q Sauce; the Cornbread Muffins; and Green Eggs and Ham – a flavorful combination of local produced country ham, basil pesto and red bliss potato hash.
While there’s not a separate kids’ menu, the restaurant is definitely family friendly and will whip up kid classic dishes like chicken fingers and traditional grilled cheese sandwiches.
