Key West is a beautiful island just 90 miles north of Cuba and 125 miles south of Miami. It’s known for its rowdy fun, live music, drag shows and bar crawls. But did you know that Key West is also a great family vacation destination?
Key West has family friendly attractions that will keep the kids & parents entertained for days on end and their restaurants have some of the best fresh seafood dishes. It all comes down to the right timing.
When planning a Key West family vacation the time of year you visit can make all the difference in family fun vs. adult entertainment. The same goes for the time of day you visit attractions and restaurants.
Best Time of Year to Visit Key West with the Family
Plan your trip for June or July. Although it’s the start of hurricane season, the season really kicks in later in the summer. These months brings about the best ocean waters. It’s a great time to enjoy family water sports like fishing, kayaking or snorkeling in the Keys.
Stay away from Key West in March when spring breakers take over Duval Street. The same goes for October when the annual Fantasy Fest brings out all sorts of crazy adult partiers. You’ll spend much of your time covering the kids’ eyes from the body paints and other creative clothing or lack of clothing stomping around the key.
Regardless which month you visit, the time of day you hit Duval Street is something to consider. Partiers tend to head back to their hotel in the late afternoon and don’t return to mid-evening. This is a great time to visit the popular restaurants with the kids. Have an early dinner and walk down to Mallory Square for the daily Sunset Celebration. It’s great fun and typically family friendly.
