Want to explore the beautiful unspoiled Georgia coast and learn more about turn of the century U.S. history with your family? Jekyll Island Club Hotel, located on Jekyll Island south of Savannah, Georgia, is the perfect mix of stately Southern elegance, nature, and family fun.
We spent five nights at the Jekyll Island Club as part of their Family Beach Getaway package and the moment we arrived I knew this was no cookie cutter chain hotel. The resort looks like a Victorian castle nd the charm and history is second to none.
We stayed in a spacious 4th floor two-room suite overlooking the intracoastal waterway and the hotel pool (which is heated year round much to my delight as my 6-year-old daughter is extremely cold-natured.) Our accommodations and bathroom were fully renovated, but I loved the charming original window, still on a rope lever system. Although the hotel has modern amenities, such as Wifi, you see traces of its rich history everywhere and a glimpse at what this grand old hotel was like when it was a bustling turn of the century vacation spot for such American business tycoons as the Rockefellers and Pulitzers.
Each morning we started our day with an amazing breakfast buffet in the Grand Dining Room. I loved the elegant touches, from the crisp white linens and the cut red rose in a vase on every table. My girls ordered a short stack of pancakes nearly every morning (included in the buffet). In the evenings you can literally walk across the hotel lawn and driveway to Rah Bar and Latitude 31 for casual dining on the intracoastal, fun live music, and a laid-back beach vibe.
Although the hotel is not located on the beach, the Atlantic Ocean is a quick shuttle drive away and the hotel ran shuttles as needed all day long. There are also numerous bike trails throughout the island. The first morning we arrived at the beach it was uncrowded and we enjoyed the use of the beach pavilion and its full-service snack bar. My girls also loved the hotel pool, which overlooks the intracoastal, and I loved the Drunken Monkey, the pool bar’s signature rum drink. Although we didn’t hit the tennis courts or play golf, the Jekyll Island Club Hotel features clay courts and there are four golf courses to choose from, as well as miniature golf on the island for kids. Other family friendly activities on the island include dolphin cruises, horseback riding, croquet on the grand lawn of the hotel, and kayaking and canoeing. The hotel is situated on 20 acres of lush property so it truly feels like you have escaped the hustle and bustle of daily life and entered island time.
Our beach vacation package included tickets to the Georgia Sea Turtle Center, an amazing rescue and rehabilitation center just a short walk from the hotel. We also enjoyed the historic trolley tour of the island and learning about it’s amazing history. Just a short drive from the hotel is Summer Waves water park, another big hit for my 6 and 9-year-old.
If you’re looking for laid-back coastal Southern charm steeped in history and family friendly activities, then Jekyll Island is the perfect vacation spot for you, whether you’re a family with young kids, a couple looking for a romantic retreat, or someone wanting to plan a luxurious girlfriends’ spa weekend.
