Gulf_Shores_Grandma_boysThere are a lot of beach options in Southern Alabama. We have been to many with the kids over the few years my parents have lived in Mobile. I have many fond memories of my visits to the public beach at Gulf Shores – a good, cheap fun day out with the family.

The main plus point of Gulf Shores is that it is clean and the sand is beautiful. And it has showers and bathrooms. The drawbacks, to me, are that said showers and bathrooms are across the parking lot. And that parking is $5 (though it seemed not everyone paid and maybe they knew something we didn’t). For us it was also a bit of a drive which is a long day with the kids. Still, the weather was perfect and we had fun cavorting in the waves (well, my mom and the 4 yo boys did) and burying the kids in sand, while spread out with a picnic.

The 8-month-old also enjoyed eating the sand and lounging about and snacking in the stroller. We saw a family with a brilliant idea for handling a baby at the beach – the pack’n’play, with a fitted sheet attached to the top to keep the sun out. Not that she wanted to stay in it all that long, but still a great idea.

All in all Gulf Shores is a fun day out and a good beach-y atmosphere.
