As much as I love visiting Disney Parks, I seek refuge from the sensory bombardment which usually accompanies any trip to a theme park. From the sights, sounds, smells and tastes, my family and I are sometimes overwhelmed by all there is to take in — thus, bringing on the need to decompress. I recently found a little jewel of a property within the shadows of some of Disney’s iconic attractions – the Waldorf Astoria Orlando at Bonnet Creek – with all the makings for an oasis among the bevy of activity.
Different travelers find various ways to relax while on vacation (or on business), and the Waldorf Astoria Orlando is in no short supply of those prerequisite amenities which most rely upon to help them unwind. For my husband, a property is considered “top notch” in his book if it has championship golf, and the Waldorf Astoria Golf Club provides an exceptional setting with an 18-hole Rees Jones-designed championship course. For resort guests (of the Waldorf Astoria or neighboring Hilton Bonnet Creek), greens fees for 18 holes range from $75 for a twilight rate to $125 for a morning tee time during peak season. Outside guests are welcome to reserve tee times as well and can do so by booking online or by calling the clubhouse at (407) 597-3782.
My idea of a relaxing getaway within a vacation is some time spent at a spa and then an afternoon with the kids at the pool. The Spa by Guerlain is a 24,000 square-foot spa within the Waldorf Astoria that includes 22 treatment rooms with a full range of services including: facial therapies, body treatments, an array of massages, hand & foot specialties, full salon services (hair & nails), men-specific treatments and therapies, full spa packages and make up artistry.
The pools of the Waldorf Astoria Orlando offer a soothing respite from the bustling you’ll experience in the parks, and reserving a private cabana is a great way to please both the kids who never want to leave the pool and the grown –ups who feel tied to the TV or laptop or iPad. There is free Wi-Fi available poolside, and the cabanas come fully stocked with drinks, snacks, towels, sunscreen and cable TV. On my preview stay, I invited some friends from the area over to enjoy the cabana with me since my family couldn’t be there. The men quickly planted themselves on the cushy chairs in the cabana and immediately turned the TV to sports while the women soaked up the sun, sipped on cool drinks and nibbled from a platter of fruit (which come with the booking of the cabana).
When I travel, I often try to see properties and destinations through others’ eyes – not just my own list of preferences. My teen son now requests that wherever we stay needs to have a sufficient fitness facility to keep him in shape for the various sports in which he participates. The Fitness Center at the Waldorf Astoria Orlando is a complimentary, 24-hour facility with dozens of cardio machines (with individual flat-screen TVs), weight machines, dumbbells, benches, fitness balls, yoga mats and more. The facility looks out over the pool area and property and staffs a fitness attendant.
A friend with whom we sometimes travel insists that no matter where in the world he lays his head, there must be a good steak and a well-made cocktail nearby. He would be pleased with his choices at the Waldorf Astoria Orlando. The celebrated restaurants within the Waldorf-Astoria in New York have won worldwide acclaim for their inspired cuisine and creative libations. The offerings at the Waldorf Astoria Orlando for fine dining mirror those timeless classics in an enticing collection of eateries. Original creations such as The Waldorf Salad, Veal Oscar, Red Velvet Cake, Thousand Island Dressing, and the Manhattan were all born at the flagship property in New York City. And in homage to this tradition of innovation, Waldorf Astoria Orlandohas meticulously re-created these dining venues in more than name alone – including:
So, whether you’re looking for a convenient and comfortable place to relax after a day at the parks or a retreat worthy of never stepping off property, the Waldorf Astoria Orlando has just what the family needs to make a vacation tailor-made for each member. As is customary with travel writing, I received a three-night stay at the Waldorf Astoria Orlando, complimentary meals at two of its restaurants, service at its spa and recreational opportunities. However, my reviews remain objective and are not influenced by what was provided. In addition, although I am a member of the Walt Disney World Moms Panel, my opinions do not represent Disney.
