The most popular spot in Jerusalem, Israel (10) is its Old City, home of holy sites for Christian, Jewish and Muslim religions. For your family to get the most out of a visit, Marathon TravelingMom Lorraine Sanabria Robertson recommends hiring a guide to point out things you might otherwise miss and explain religious etiquette. Cape Town’s Botanical Garden and a funicular to a mountaintop may be fun for your family. For why one family decided to spend time in the impoverished townships but not to visit Nelson Mandela’s former prison cell when they visited in 2011, click this Traveling Mom post on Cape Town, South Africa (9).

Your family might enjoy the whimsical mosaics of Parc Guell in Barcelona, Spain (8), along with the Aquarium, and taking a ride up a nearby mountain. Abroad TravelingMom Monique Rubin visited Barcelona in 2012 and has other suggestions here.

Krakow, Poland

My family was surprised by the beauty and liveliness of Krakow, Poland (7). The center of Krakow is a huge outdoor market lined by sidewalk cafes. If your family enjoys history, architecture, and comfort food, or wonders how an underground Salt Mine can have a church and sculptures, Krakow is a great destination.

Bangkok, Thailand

When she visited Bangkok, Thailand (6) in 2012, Expat TravelingMom Heather B. figured out how to get there, where to stay, and how to get around with kids. From the old Palace and Temple, the giant Bhudda, to markets and modern shopping malls, there’s plenty to do with kids in Bangkok.

Rome, Italy

Military TravelingMom Meagan Shamy says a great way for families to explore art and architecture in Rome, Italy (5) is to hire a guide to help keep your kids engaged.

Charleston, South Carolina

The only American city on the Travel & Leisure list is Charleston. If your family enjoys great food, architecture, waterfront views, and a city that’s easy to explore on foot, consider visiting Charleston, South Carolina.
