Crystal River is considered one of the most unique places to visit in Florida. It is part of Florida’s Nature Coast. Therefore, most of the attractions are nature oriented. The main reason why I wanted to take my family there was to swim with manatee. Crystal River and Homosassa Springs are considered the best places in the world for swimming with these amazing animals and we were so ready to go.

Searching for Crystal River Florida Hotels

Half of the fun of planning a trip to a new destination is finding where to stay, where to eat DisclosureTMOMand fun things to do. And looking for hotels in this area was way more fun than I thought it would be.

The first thing is that there are very few big hotel chains here. Plus, most of the lodges are mom and pop styled and when I came across on Kings Bay Lodge I knew I found a winner.

It had everything I was looking for. It was small, on the water and had a room that was large enough to accommodate my family. When I say accommodate, I am talking about having enough beds for everyone. Most hotels have two double beds and getting in another one can be a problem. In some cases, they don’t have them; other times, there is no room for it.

Another aspect of accommodating is space. The kids need to have some to be able to veg out or play without getting too much into my hair.

Kings Bay Lodge is uniquely designed. It calls itself a motel, but I learned that aside from the layout of the rooms there is nothing that makes you think about a motel. On the contrary, to me it was more or a vacation rental.

We got a huge room. It might have had only one room, but the way that it was set up didn’t feel like it at all.

King’s Bay Lodge Room Layout and Property

We had a full kitchen, a living room with comfy pull out chairs and TV, a walk in closet and full bathroom with great shower pressure, two double beds and on the other side of the room, near the small dining area a pull out sofa bed.

It was so roomy that we never got on each other’s nerves. That was very important because having two energetic boys can cause that to happen – quickly! Plus if any of us needed to get away for a second, the property is big enough.

Added to all of the above mentioned, there was also a natural spring pool. The days we were there, a cold front was happening and definitely not warm enough for swimming. However it was a blessing in disguise because it is said that is when you see the most amount of Manatee. And we were there just for that reason. So it wasn’t a big deal.

The experience also made me remember how much fun it can be to stay in tiny mom and pop motels. The whole experience brought me back to my youth when my parents used to take me and my brother to national parks around New York and we used to stay in quaint little hotels just like this one.
