Are you ready for an adventure? On your next trip to Key West, include at least a day in the beautiful ocean with water sports and boating trips that can’t get any more tropical and adventurous as they do in Key West.
On a recent Key West trip, our family was invited to experience FURY Water Adventures. Since 1993, FURY has been hosting water adventures for locals and visitors in Key West. We perused the FURY website trying to decide which would be the best water adventure with our family of 4 – kids ages 2 and 6. We chose the FURY Island Adventure – a five-hour water fun experience!
Embarking and Snacking
We chose the afternoon sailing, which had us beginning the adventure at 3:30. We boarded the small catamaran with tremendous excitement for our adventure. Fresh fruit and danishes were set out in the cabin for guests to enjoy as we set sail.
Snorkeling with Kids in Key West
Within 30 minutes we had arrived at the reef. The crew provided instructions on how to use the snorkeling equipment. They also shared great tips on how to best see some of the beautiful fish around the reef.
We were all so excited. My husband Tom and I got the girls all set up and began our snorkeling. Yes, the 2 year old “snorkeled” too.
Based on the recommendation from the crew, our kids had a swimming noddle threaded through their inflatable vest. This allowed them, particularly the 6 year old, to float and snorkel without too much swimming and treading. It was perfect and helpful for the toddler who was only in the water for 10 minutes or so, held by either parent.
The 30 minutes we spent snorkeling were wonderful. It was a blast snorkeling alongside my 6 year old and witnessing her excitement as she spotted “Nemo” and other beautiful reef fish.
When we all re-boarded the ship we were greeted with a great spread of food – sandwiches, pasta salad, hummus, chips and more. Beer, wine, sodas and water were also available.
Kayaking in the Florida Keys
The captain took us a bit closer to a key and stopped the boat. He lowered the kayaks and began explaining the next part of our adventure. We would each kayak to a sandbar several hundred feet away! The toddler had just fallen asleep on the boat, so I went ahead with the 6 year old on the kayak. She sat in front and together we used our paddles to kayak to the sandbar.
The little one woke up 15 minutes after we left, so Tom kayaked to the sandbar with her to meet us. Yes, the toddler kayaked, too!
Exploring the Sandbar
The sandbar was perfect for exploring. The crew was quick to show us different sea creatures and shells that had washed up or were easily viewed in the shallow clear water. We learned loads of interesting details about the Florida Keys ocean life.
Kayaking the Mangroves
Fifteen minutes later we all boarded our kayaks again. This time I went with the toddler. We followed one of the crew along a mangrove. He shared information about the mangroves, including how they survive, how they grow and the different species around the Keys. I was very impressed with the crew’s knowledge of marine life and oceanography.
Florida Keys Sunset
At last we returned to the boat from our kayaking adventure. Cookies were brought out – yes, the kids quickly had them in their hands. We slowly began heading back to Key West. A mile or so outside of Key West we came to a stop so we could enjoy the sunset. It was breathtaking. It was the perfect end to a perfect day.
FURY Water Adventures
I couldn’t recommend the Island Adventure on FURY highly enough. It was a fantastic trip, with a fantastic crew. Yes, the optimal weather, very calm waters and cooperative children helped, too.
