If you’ve never been to Lake George in New York’s Adirondack region, you’re missing out on a little slice of heaven! I may be just a little bias because I spent all my summers there as a kid, but even the most unbiased eye would have to agree that it’s a beautiful place. Not only is it beautiful, but there is not shortage of things to do when you visit Lake George.

5 Things To Do When You Visit Lake George

I recently took a quick trip to New York and had an extra day to spend as a tourist in Lake George. While the lake is very large, I spent my day in the town of Lake George, at the south end of the lake. The most visited section of the lake, it’s also the part of the lake with the most to do. I squeezed in as much as I could and these are just a few of the many things to do when you visit Lake George.

Lake George Steamboat Tours

What better way to see the lake than to take a cruise, right? Lake George Steamboat Tours have a lot of options, so you can choose the one that fits best with your vacation plans. While I was there, I took an hour long cruise aboard the Minnie-Ha-Ha. This authentic steamboat, complete with paddle wheel, was the perfect way to see the lake.

There’s even a steam calliope (sounding somewhat like an organ) that plays a song towards the end of the cruise. The best part was that it played a duet with its own echo. If you listen closely enough, you’ll hear the echo responding.

There are three ships with plenty of different options, depending on what you’d like to do. The moonlight and fireworks cruises feature live entertainment. Meal cruises cover everything from brunch to dinner, and I’m pretty sure my girls would love the Taco Tuesday or Mac & Cheese Wednesday cruises.

Fort William Henry

While Lake George is a place for fun, it is steeped in history as well. Fort William Henry is located in the center of the village and played a pivotal part in the French and Indian War. Adults may enjoy the fort for the history, but kids will love being able to “join” the king’s army. The newly initiated soldiers get a uniform, a musket, a certificate showing that they’ve enlisted and even a coin for payment.

While here, you can take a stroll through the museum exhibits and witness live firing demonstrations of muskets and cannons.

The view isn’t bad either. You can get a bird’s eye view of what the soldiers must have seen.

Adirondack Extreme

Though not located in the town of Lake George, Adirondack Extreme is just a 25-minute drive away in the neighboring town of Bolton Landing. If your family likes outdoor adventures, this is the place to go. I have become a big fan of zipline courses, having already visited TreeUmph in Sarasota, Florida and TreeHoppers in Pasco County, Florida. The actual courses are all similar but the scenic views that you get with Adirondack Extreme just can’t be beaten.

One of the more adventurous things to do when you visit Lake George, NY is to visit Adirondack Extreme.

This course will have you ziplining through the trees, crawling through tunnels high above the ground and slowly maneuvering your way across shaky bridges.

If you're not scared of heights, a treetop adventure course is one of the most exciting things to do when you visit Lake George, NY.

Though it may seem dangerous, it’s actually all very safe. You’re given a 1/2 hour safety training ahead of time, where they teach you how to make your way through the course. You also have a safety harness with clips so that you’re clipped onto a safety line at all time. Even if you were to lose your balance, the clips keep you from going anywhere.

This a great family activity and all the kids looked like they were having a fantastic time. Children as young as 7 can participate, though my oldest didn’t really start to enjoy these courses until she was about 9.

TravelingMom Tip: If your child is afraid of heights, this may not the best activity to choose. The course can be challenging and you’re pretty high up off the ground so this is an activity for more adventurous kids.

Mini Golf

We love to play mini golf on vacation and there are several locations around Lake George for families to enjoy. Most have whimsical courses with giant animals, famous landmarks, and other fun designs. They can be a little cheesy but isn’t that what makes them so much fun?

Horse & Carriage Tour

It can definitely get hot walking around Lake George in the summer. What better way to take a break than with a fun horse and carriage ride around the beach area. This is a great idea if you’ve got the kids with you. Mine always love tours like these and it peps them right up when they get hot and tired. This tour begins just across the street from the steamboats and in front of Fort William Henry and is the perfect activity for all ages.

These are just a few of the many things to do when you visit Lake George, New York. There are also water sports, parasailing, hiking, golf and even a theme park. However, if you only have a short time like I did, this is where I’d start. This popular vacation spot in the Adirondacks makes for a great family vacation destination.
