Soho in recent years has become quite the shopping destination. I don’t go to Soho often but when I do, I try to make a day of it since many of the stores only have the one location. Here are my usually shopping grounds when I am lucky to make it to Soho!
This used to be the best kept secret in New York back when the store was located near Canal Street. Then it moved into a fancier location a few blocks north of Canal Street and voila! became destination shopping mecca for both tourists and New Yorkers alike. Pearl River Mart is basically a Chinese department selling a multitude of goods that includes clothes, Chinese slippers, bags, accessories (wallets and coin purses), furniture, cool notebooks, books, lamps, dishes, food, fabric and so much more. Whether you are looking to redecorate, want to find that special gift or find the perfect accessory no one will have, this is a store for you.
And if you just need a break from all the shopping in Soho, head to the cafe for some tea. Do plan to spend time in the store, it’s worth your time.

This is by far the one of the best book, toy and gift stores for kids in New York. The store is bright, airy and is wonderfully laid out so you can shop in peace. There is even the Magic School Bus which houses all the science books where you and your child will enjoy relaxing and reading a book. There are always events at the store so check to see if you can schedule a trip during of them as they are always well run and will end up being something your child remembers. My daughter went to a Clifford the Dog event years ago and still remembers it and of course the store.
I discovered Muji, aka Mujirushi Ry?hin which means “No Brand Quality Goods,” while living in Japan. I love the store because of it’s clean, no-nonsense minimalist look and of course, the practical line of housewares, stationary, travel bags, organizational items and clothes. I liked that it’s reasonably priced and well-made. The sales people are likeable cool hipsters but with no attitude. My favorite gift item is City in a Bag wooden blocks that include, Paris, New York, London and Tokyo. Too cool.

4. Top Shop
This British import has been mobbed ever since it opened. The store offers cool, hip and trendy clothing that is pretty affordable. Don’t forget stop in the Kate Moss designed section and of course, visit the shoe section. Both to die for.
