My family and I decided to visit Smuggler’s Notch Resort in Vermont once more. But this time we did it during the winter months. I thought that spending three nights in it would be enough but I was wrong. It offers too many fun activities. Just exploring the area that surrounded our condo took one full day.
Smuggler’s Notch Resort, Vermont
There is a phenomenon that I’ve noticed among kids (and some adults). They YEARN for snow. It took me a while to realize that, because I grew up in snow. For me it’s not a novelty. But recently my sons have been begging for a snowy adventure.
Listening to them fantasize about it brought back tons of memories about how fun it used to be to play around in the snow. I even started missing it a bit. After all, it has been over 20 years since I’ve experienced a snowy winter.
I am not sure about why I have resisted taking my kids to a snow destination for years. But this year, I finally caved.
Vermont is one of my favorite places to visit in the states. My family and I have visited the area a few times already during the summer time. This made it my number one choice when I finally started planning my family’s first winter vacation.
Whenever we go to Vermont, we stay at Vermont Smuggler’s Notch Resort. I am not a fan of going back to the same place over and over again, but this resort has been great over the summer and their website offered a lot of fun activities for the winter months. So I decided to make it one of our main stops. I thought that spending three nights in it would be enough. What a big mistake!
When the time came for us to leave the resort, I realized that three nights at Smuggler’s Notch during winter is like arriving to Yosemite Park for one hour. It is simply not enough time. Even though we were able to try a few of their activities and see some others, we would have needed at least two more nights to experience everything we wanted to do.
I had to learn the hard way that when they say that they have a lot to offer, it is an understatement. It felt like I was a little girl in a candy shop who couldn’t buy everything.
But before I go ahead with the description of everything that you can do at Smuggs, let me give you a quick trip around the resort so you can get an idea of what we were dealing with.
First of all we made sure to fully take advantage of each day. We were outside from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. So even if 3 days wasn’t enough, we really managed to take full advantage of every hour there. This didn’t allow us to enjoy our condo within the resort. But we managed to sneak in some fun time in it as well.
Staying at Smuggler’s Notch Resort Condos
Unlike most ski resorts I visited when I was younger, Smugglers Notch doesn’t have your standard hotel rooms. Instead it offers condos or vacation rentals of all different sizes.
For this vacation I had a reservation for one of their two bedroom units. In my mind, it would be large enough for us. But when we got there I noticed that this place was huge. It was probably the size of a large four bedroom house. The bedrooms were that big.
The kitchen, dining room and living room were spacious, open and so cozy with a fireplace going all night.
One aspect I really enjoyed was the indoor porch. It was set up in a way where we were able to sit there comfortably during the winter, but enjoyed the full effect of being outdoors. This was my favorite place to relax and soak in the great views of the slopes.
The favorite area of the house for my sons was the bathroom with a Jacuzzi. They spent at least an hour each night playing in it after a whole day of playing in the snow.
The kitchen is also something that I would have usually enjoyed a lot. I mean, it was equipped with anything you could possibly need. However, for some reason during this vacation, I wasn’t in the mood for cooking. I still preferred eating at the restaurants on their property.
Smuggler’s Notch has Several Restaurants in the Village (the main area)
We weren’t able to visit all of the restaurants but there were two that stood out for us:
First there is Morse Mountain Grille. This great place offers kid fun and good food. We had a lot of family fun there.
Then there is Hearth & Candle. It is a more upscale place where my husband and I got away for a candlelit dinner.
There are several condo complexes, each with its own pool area. Some even have water slides and water park activities. Just exploring the area around our condo took one whole day. Plus, each area has its own health club and other activities around.
Even more more pools are in the main area, along with tennis courts and a Fun Zone with activities for families and kids.
