Traveling with teens in New York City can get expensive, especially if, like me, you travel with a family of five. But there are ways to save money.
One way to save is to stay in a hotel like Hyatt Place in New York City’s Midtown that includes breakfast and has a room that can accommodate more than four people, so you don’t have to pay for two connecting rooms.
Of course, the money you save on the room might be money you spend in the neighborhood. That’s because Hyatt Place is located near Herald Square, where there is lots of shopping – like the huge Macy’s department store, the Empire State Building and all of the retailers along 34th Street. We visited during the holidays, which gave us a front row seat to the Macy’s, Lord & Taylor and Saks Fifth Avenue store windows decked out in their holiday finest.
The deluxe room offers two queen beds and a pullout couch so even though it costs a bit more than a regular room rate, it is worth it. When you’re traveling with teens, the free breakfast alone can save $50-60 per day, especially with hungry teens. The front desk referred to it as a continental breakfast although there were lots of choices. However, our family was split on breakfast satisfaction. The boys loved it – they ate bagels and scrambled eggs. The girls, not so much – the yogurt was runny and the fruit wasn’t great.
Even though I would prefer a better breakfast offering, the room, the front desk service with a smile (not so easy to find in New York City) and the location were terrific for our family of two adults and three teens. (If you go to Hyatt and book this hotel, Traveling Mom will receive a referral fee.)
