Hudson Valley is known for its rich culinary experiences and farm to table movement.It is home to a host of well known restaurants, celebrity chefs and the Culinary Institute of America. The Hudson Valley Restaurant Week (HVRW) is a great way to showcase a variety of restaurants from bistros to fine dining. This is a much awaited event in the area that occurs twice a year, typically in March and November. Three course meals are offered at $20.95 for lunch or at $29.95 for dinner. It is fantastic way to try restaurants that are above your budget or sample cuisines that are beyond your comfort zone.
I have been supporting HVRW since I moved to Westchester five years ago. Last year with my new born was no exception. HVRW was an incentive for me to plan my weekends around restaurant outings. Arriving for an already set menu also makes the service faster which is great when you have a limited time for eating out with a baby. We always let the restaurant know about dining with a baby when we making our reservation. This ensures that space for the stroller or a high chair is available and we are seated at an easily accessible table in a relatively quiet part of the restaurant. We make sure to bring a few of baby’s staple dry foods such as cheerios and crackers along with some small toys to keep him occupied at the table.
My biggest tip for restaurant week is to make reservations as early as possible. It is fine to put a place holder then confirm or cancel once your plans are finalized. As some restaurants do not participate in this set menu during Friday night, weekend and special holidays, it is a good idea to confirm participation ahead of time. I also recommend looking through the restaurant week menus beforehand to prevent any surprises or disappointments.
My son had a great time exploring the beautiful space at the 42 Restaurant in White Plains during the spring season. We experienced fine dining at an affordable rate from the vantage point of the tallest building in the area. I look forward to sharing more culinary adventures with my family from Nov 4th-17th at the Hudson Valley Restaurant Week this season. It is also an easy way to make a weekly lunch with co-workers or your significant a special experience.
