Markets and I have been friends for a long time. I look for one everywhere I go and can spend hours wandering in them, looking at the stuff, enjoying the atmosphere and buying nothing at all.
Living in Guatemala has helped this obsession not only stay alive but grow. There are tons and amazing, traditional and local markets with prices I thought would never be beat, especially in the US, but I was wrong! Everything in the Haymarket in Boston is dirt cheap! Plus, it is full of history.
What Makes Haymarket in Boston Unique
1. It all started over two centuries ago when a bunch of locals started congregating in this area selling hay, and slowly other produce were introduced.
2. Even today in the days of big supermarket chains, it is alive and booming. Nowadays you will find fresh produce at the lowest prices possible.
3. A lot of people say that the fruits and veggies that are sold here are what supermarkets couldn’t sell during the week.
4. Even though it is unsold one week old produce, I must say that it has been a long time since I haven’t seen such a varied supply of fresh, most colorful fruits, berries and veggies.
5. There is way more in the market than just veggies and fruit. It is also full of delicious and cheap cheese, fresh seafood and even goat meat!
Fun Facts about Haymarket in Boston
Haymarket Square in Boston is an open-air fruit and vegetable market that you will find every Friday and Saturday near the North End, close to Government Center, and Faneuil Hall Marketplace.
Historians found out that it has been officially opened since 1830’s. But vendors started congregating here at least 100 years earlier.
Just as it happens to tons of things through the years it has undergone a few transformations but it has managed to preserve its chaotic charm.
There are no official hours but vendors start setting up at around 6am and stay for about 12 hours. Sometimes they leave later during summer.
It is everything your average supermarket isn’t: cheap and loud and in your face.
