Fans of unusual roadside attractions: imagine a city devoted to the superhero Superman. Metropolis, Illinois, has that distinction. Located in southern Illinois across the Ohio River from Paducha, Kansas, it’s a stop for fans and those looking for a place to write home about.
Superman in Metropolis, Illinois
Metropolis’ main homage to Superman is a 12-foot-tall, two-ton bronze statue. It is a popular photo op, with short to moderate lines. A ramp is available for travelers with disabilities. Close by is a plywood cutout of the Man of Steel, where you can become the TV show, comics and movie idol.
The Super Museum holds a collection of Superman memorabilia and a store. Admission is $5 for adults; children 5 and under are free. Each year, Metropolis holds the Superman Celebration for thousands of fans.
