Lions and tigers and bears … and butterflies, monkeys, and a train are among some of the many attractions at the Detroit Zoo. Located in Royal Oak, Mich, the zoo provides family fun with indoor and outdoor displays, including opportunities to interact with the animals.
My family recently spent a good part of the day at the zoo, where we saw several species of animals and enjoyed the kids’ first train ride.
Tips for Family Travel to the Detroit Zoo
If you go to the zoo, plan to arrive early in the day; the zoo will be less crowded with people and the animals are more likely to be out and about during the cooler part of the day.
When you arrive, think about taking the train to the back of the zoo; several trains run throughout the day, with stops at the front and the back of the zoo property. Arrive early and take the train to the back, then work your way back to the front without having to deal with crowds.
In addition, pack trail mix or other snacks and water, and consider bringing a picnic as well. There are many shady spots throughout the property with picnic tables, and, when we visited, there were also large tents set up with shady areas for visitors to sit down and enjoy a meal or just rest and get out of the sun.
