Ever get aggravated with a sibling? Dissapointed by a parent? Perplexed over life’s changes? The universal trials of childhood are brought to the stage in Emerald City Theatre Company’s “Ramona Quimby.”
The voice of author Beverly Cleary’s feisty 3rd grader has spoken to generations. I remember reading about “Ramona the Pest” and her big sis Beezus, when I was a kid. Emerald City plays up the nostalgia trip for parents like me by sprinkling a soundtrack of golden oldies throughout the production. Van Morrison, Stevie Wonder, and Jackson Five songs made me misty-eyed during this sweet children’s play about the joys and challenges of family. Life doesn’t always work out perfectly for Ramona or her folks, and that’s the charm of the books and this play.
“Ramona Quimby” is best for kids 6 through 12. It runs through May 16th at Chicago’s Apollo Theatre. Tickets are $16 for adults, and $13 for children.
