Fall is my favorite time of year. I love the combination of mild temperatures and beautiful autumn foliage that lures me from my home and into the outdoors to hike and enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of the changing season that surround me. I could plan an amazing fall road trip with Traveling Mom’s 14 Favorite Fall Getaways, but I prefer to stick around my hometown of Mansfield, Ohio in Richland County.
Some of the best fall color displays in Richland County can be seen along the Clearfork Reservoir, at Gorman Nature Center and at Malabar Farm State Park. Though it’s not in Richland County, nearby Mohican State Park also provides beautiful views over the gorge and great hiking trails as well.
Mohican is currently offering a great incentive for families. You can read Good Grades Pay at Ohio State Parks to learn how your child’s A’s can turn into lodging discounts at select Ohio state park lodges.
I love to see the fall colors reflected along the 14 miles of shoreline along the Clearfork Reservoir. Probably the best way to enjoy the view is by boat on the lake, but you’ll also find a nice picnic area with a shelter house and restroom facilities that provides a relaxing backdrop for a pleasant family fall outing.
Gorman Nature Center offers several miles of hiking trails, an abundance of wildlife and a small environmentally friendly visitor’s center that offers free educational public programs. The grounds open from dusk to dawn year round and provide a beautiful display of fall foliage.
Malabar Farm State Park located near Lucas, is a working farm that offers a plethora of fall fun. Whether you enjoy home tours, wagon rides, square dancing, hiking or feeding the chickens, you’ll find something at Malabar Farm for the entire family.
The Mt. Jeez Overlook at Malabar Farm State Park also offers the best scenic view in Richland County any time of year, but in the fall the views are incredible. When my kids were little, we’d drive to the top of Mt. Jeez and they’d roll down the hill where my husband and I would drive down and around the hill to wait for them. As teenagers they no longer enjoy rolling down the hill, but they still enjoy the view that the overlook provides of the grounds of Malabar Farm and Pleasant Hill Lake in the distance.
