FallColorsInMichiganAs I sit and stare out of my window, fall is in full bloom and the trees are turning every shade of red, gold, orange, brown and purple imaginable. Here in Michigan, we certainly have a lot of trees – 50% of the state is covered in forests, and one-fifth of them are state forests.

Even in smaller cities and neighborhoods across the state, this time of year brings a vivid color palette that can be truly gorgeous.

Along with the change in tree color, autumn also brings harvest season. Michigan is the third largest apple producing state in the country with 950 apple farms – many of which provide tours, u-pick options or simply a place to stop and have a crunchy, sweet snack. As well as the apple tours, another common fall experience is to visit local pumpkin patches. Not just to choose your pumpkin and go – no, these places offer corn mazes, hayrides, petting farms, and many other fun family activities for an experience that you just can’t get any other time of the year. I know my own kids have gone on field trips for school over the years – I went with my youngest’s preschool class to the apple orchard yesterday, in fact. Watching twenty 4-year-olds tromp through the orchard and learn how apples are picked, sorted, stored and processed was an education for we parents as well. 🙂

When it comes to choosing where to go, there are a lot of websites that offer information – whether you’re looking for apples, pumpkins or both. A good place to start is at the official Michigan travel site, Michigan.org, where you can explore options for driving tours, see where the nearest farm or orchard is to your Michigan travel destination, and get color updates on which areas of the state are experiencing peak color at what times. A few other helpful sites also include:

There’s still plenty of time left to enjoy this year’s autumn festivities – the colors will still be bright and beautiful throughout October in many areas around the state, and the weather has been sunny and mild as well this year. With the cold and snow looming ahead, this is the perfect time to get out and explore everything that autumn in Michigan has to offer!
