I am into having incredible experiences with my boys, and when those experiences become epic sleepovers in unique locations, it’s all the more memorable. Our recent sleepover at Diggerland USA has been one our best summer memories. We’ve always loved the rides at the country’s only construction-based theme park, but when you get to experience them at night under the stars, it’s a whole new kind of adventure.

Our top 5 experiences during the Diggerland USA Camp Out
To be a part of the first family Diggerland USA Camp Out was not only an honor for my youngest son and me, but it was a night filled with many special mom and son moments. After we arrived and set up our tent, we along with the other campers had the entire Diggerland USA construction theme park to ourselves. Every ride was open! There were no lines in sight. The weather was amazing. We could not have asked for a more perfect night.
We got a little dizzy with the Spin Dizzy!
Let me correct that….I got a little dizzy with the Spin Dizzy. My 9-year-old son could ride this ride all night. The Spindizzy is Diggerland USA’s fastest ride. You sit in what can be considered the bucket. Then, the specially designed three ton high, torque JCB JS220 lifts you in the air and spins around. First, it spins one way. Then it spins the opposite way.
I rode this ONCE because when your little boy with blond hair and blue eyes gives you that look, how is a mom supposed to say no. One ride was all I needed though to let me know it was a bit too intense for me. But he loved it and the Diggerland ride operator was happy to let him go on as much as he wanted to.
Driving the Workmax Truck like a pro
During the Diggerland USA Camp Out and between his rides on the Spin Dizzy, we explored some of the other Diggerland rides. My son headed for the Workmax trucks. He was actually surprised that he was big enough to drive one. In the blink of an eye, he was in the driver seat.
I have to say I was actually surprised how well he drove that truck. He concentrated and navigated the track like it was no big deal. While some first-time Diggerland drives might bump a tire or barrier, he had no problems at all. On his second turn with the Workmax truck, he even allowed me to come on board to join him.
How high can you go?
The ropes course at Diggerland USA, claims to be one of the world’s tallest, at 4 stories tall. It can be quite intimidating. In the past, my son, wouldn’t go too far on it. But during the Diggerland USA Camp Out, he was feeling more adventurous, part scared, part daredevil. He strapped up and started heading up. He did all the paths on the first level before heading up to the second.
From the ground, I was both anxious and excited for him. Strapped into the harness, I knew he was safe. I cheered him on. I was curious to see how high he would go. He completed all of the second level, before deciding that was enough of the ropes course for one night. There were no tears. He just calmly decided that third level could wait for his next visit to Diggerland.
A view like no other
One of Diggerland’s most unique rides is the Sky Shuttle. Unless you have a fear of heights, this is a must do ride at Diggerland. A JCB 540-170 Telehandler lifts up to 10 guests at a time up 50 feet in the air. There’s no quick moments or speed to worry about. It’s a pretty graceful ride to the top.

Once at the top you are rewarded with some amazing views of Diggerland. We could see all of the rides, the parking lot, and more. At nighttime with a clear sky, the view was all the more incredible.
My 9-year-old actually spotted the first star of the night. Before we made the descent down, he made a wish on that first star. Of course, we took some pictures as well.
Mom and son time
When you are the youngest of three children, it can be hard to get one-on-one time with mom. There were so many moments during the evening and the following morning where it was clear my son was just eating it up. He loved getting all the attention and all the extra yeses to his requests. I let him be in charge of the rides we rode during the Diggerland USA Camp Out. He was allowed to have as many pieces of pizza he wanted during dinner. And bedtime snacks included ice cream and smores. My reward, the following morning I was spoiled with lots of “I love you”s, hugs, and kisses. What more can a mom ask for?
