Alaska2011 718For the fourth post in this five-part series,  my best Disney Cruise Tips #7 and #8 are  about maintaining your family’s health while you are onboard and getting educated with all the various events and programs on the ship so that you can fully enjoy a Disney Cruise vacation with your family.  These are my best hints and ideas from time as the Disney Cruise Mom on the Walt Disney World Moms Panel where I dished out advice to other Disney Cruise Line guests.  The complete list of the top ten so far are linked here, which includes:

When many guests walk on board the ship, they sometimes throw their good common sense overboard when it comes to taking care of themselves.  There are several things you can do to make sure your family not only stays healthy for their vacation but also enjoys it to maximize the experience.  While you’re onboard (especially for days at sea), there are many programs and activities provided which can serve as educational opportunities and fun ways to learn.

  1. Maintain Your Health (and Weight).  Along with Disney’s legendary service and quality entertainment, the food aboard a Disney ship is amazing and difficult to resist.  In order to enjoy your vacation to its fullest, remember to keep your body healthy on a cruise and avoid the temptation to overindulge just because it’s included.  Disney ships offer plenty of healthy options on dinner menus as well as at the quick service locations and on buffets.  In addition, there are plenty of places to maintain your exercise regimen including Deck 4 for running/walking, and the fitness center is well equipped with cardio machines, free weights, weight machines and scheduled classes.  Remember when you travel that it’s easy to get dehydrated…so drink lots of water and don’t compromise your sleep patterns.  Throwing your body out of whack can put you at greater risk for getting sick – which means you miss a portion of the vacation you’ve been anticipating.  And speaking of getting sick, make sure you consider motion sensitivity before you ever leave home.  If you get carsick or are sensitive to thrill rides at an amusement park, you may need to consult with your doctor about a prescription for motion sickness – it’s always better to treat motion sickness before rather than after the fact.
  1. Get Educated.  Study your daily Personal Navigator and take advantage of seminars, talks, tours and tastings.  We’ve learned so much about the culture, language and history of the places we have visited by exposing ourselves to the various learning opportunities on board.  We’ve participated in arts and crafts, cooking demonstrations, wine tastings, dances, shopping workshops and Disney Vacation Club presentations.  (Did you know that you get the best DVC deals on board Disney ships?)  My kids actually gained school credit from reports and projects based on things they learned in these Disney Cruise programs.
