Traveling moms know that taking a break and having some fun with your girlfriends is a great way to recharge. With all your choices, which type of vacation should you choose? Latina TravelingMom enjoyed a girlfriend getaway cruise with her friends on a Disney Cruise Line and had the best time! Girlfriend getaway cruises allow friends to choose their own adventures and still have plenty of together time.
Where to Go and What to Do: Girlfriend Getaway Cruises
On a cruise, you and your girlfriends can spend as much time together or apart as you like. You might decide to enjoy the amenities of the ship as a group one day, then pursue individual activities the next. Most cruise lines can accommodate the interests of even the most diverse set of girlfriends. From onboard spas, movie theaters, entertainment, rock walls, ice skating rinks, pools, shops, fitness centers, and more, cruise ships seem to have it all.
The girlfriend who loves pampering can visit the onboard spa to treat herself to a mani-pedi, massage, facial or one of the many different spa services. You could also try something more exotic, like hot stone aromatherapy, Swedish massage, seaweed facials and more. On the Disney Dream, my girlfriends and I opted for the Rainforest at Senses Spa.
We purchased a pass that entitled us to unlimited entry to the scented showers, aroma steam, sauna rooms, private jacuzzi, and heated stone loungers. You can also upgrade to include scented body scrubs for exfoliation.
It was a special treat and one of the most relaxing parts of the trip. We went together and chatted and sometimes I went by myself and grabbed a magazine to read on the stone loungers.
Adult Only Areas on Cruises
Most ships will have adult only areas. There is an adults only pool and deck area on Disney Cruise Line. Want some kid-free time? Certain lounges only allow adults if you and your girlfriends. There is even an adult only beach on Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island, that is a lot less crowded.
My friend Sarah went on the Celebrity Reflection and recommends The Lawn Club. It has plenty of free areas to stretch out and relax, but private alcoves are also available to be reserved.
Her favorite area of the ship was the Solarium. Designed as a quiet space for ages 16+, it has cushioned deck chairs that are nap-friendly. The area also offers a cool pool and two warm, jetted Jacuzzis on either side of the Solarium if you prefer swimming.
Entertainment, Shopping, and Nightlife
Girlfriend getaway cruises offer tons of entertainment options! Depending on the chosen cruise line and ship, the girlfriend who loves entertainment and shopping will find plenty of it on board. Full-size theaters present stage shows that can give Broadway a run for their money.
Also, lounges and bars often feature live music or karaoke contests in the evenings. Live it up in rocking discos and have dance parties into the wee hours. My girlfriends and I did an amazing rendition of NSYNC’s “Bye Bye Bye” during karaoke night. Trust me; it was good.
My friend Sarah also commented on how much she loved the “silent disco” on the Celebrity Reflection. She said, “Everyone gets headphones and you tune into 1 of 4 music choices and dance! It’s hysterical to watch until you put on your own headphones because it’s literally “silent” while watching people dance. It looks crazy, but once you put on your headphones, it’s so fun!” When you’re with your squad, it’s easy to try something new!
You can also shop at sea. Check out the cruise ship’s boutiques, which offer merchandise such as cruise wear, unique jewelry, and souvenirs.
Side note: on Disney Cruise Line, when the ship is at a port, the shops are closed.
The girlfriend who wants to get a workout in will enjoy the ship’s fitness activities. Get your heart rate up in the fitness center with lots of equipment and scheduled classes. Go to the sports decks with running tracks and golf cages. Or head to the pool for recreational or lap swimming. Newer ships may even feature rock-climbing walls, ice-skating rinks, boxing rings and surfing simulators.
Some cruise lines even have races. My girlfriends and I participated in the Disney Cruise Line’s Castaway Cay 5K. It’s a fun 3.1-mile race where you can go at your own pace. Running is always more fun with friends and in costume. Why not try both?
If you’re the “nah, don’t put me down for cardio type,” don’t worry, there’s plenty of other things for you to do!
Girlfriend Getaway Cruises Activities
As you can see, there is plenty of activities for everyone on girlfriend getaway cruises
The girlfriend with a taste for adventure can take a shore excursion when the ship docks in port. Depending on the cruise itinerary, you might have the opportunity to go whitewater rafting, scuba diving, parasailing or four-wheeling. When choosing a cruise destination, take note of the port stops and see what interests you most.
I’ve done the Bahamas, Eastern Caribbean, Mexico, and the Western Caribbean. Each offers something a little different, but I’ve also skipped port stops for more ship time.
If you need a reason to take a girlfriend getaway, then read these 5 reasons why you should go on a girlfriend getaway. I highly recommend the cruise, because there is something for everyone, and you can usually keep costs low since most things are included.
I didn’t even begin to mention the excellent dining on cruise ships, like my favorite Palo Brunch.
Relax and enjoy the time you have to bond with friends on girlfriend getaway cruises!
