0611AR_0280DZFamily vacation planners have discovered cruising as a great option for ease of use and delivery of fun.  Unpackig once and experiencing multiple destinations are also benefits of cruising.  I have found that cruise vacations offer me a chance to relax while my family is entertained and taken care of by an attentive staff dedicated to service.

One of my favorite cruise lines, the Disney Cruise Line,  has announced that it will send a ship to the west coast where it will sail year round.  Included on this year round sailing schedule is Alaska.  With its rugged mountainsides, sweeping glaciers and rainforests, Alaska is the perfect destination for a family friendly vacation.  The cruise line caters to families and the experience is second to none.  Award winning children’s programs, superb cuisine (including a gourmet specialty restaurant), spacious accommodations, interaction with Disney characters, and extraordinary entertainment  have fetched Disney Cruise Line top honors.

The Disney Cruise Line’s  Alaska itinerary will sail roundtrip from Vancouver starting May 3, 2011. Proposed port calls are: Skagway, Juneau, and Ketchikan with scenic cruising though Tracy Arm Fjord.

Some popular excursions to look forward to on an Alaska cruise are:

Skagway

Families that have Thomas the Tank Engine fans will not want to miss the unforgettable journey aboard the “Scenic Railway of the World” to the White Pass summit. Board in  Skagway and travel 20 miles from tidewater, to the Summit of the White Pass – a 2,865 foot elevation.

Cruise passengers can enjoy a helicopter tour of a glacier.  Depending on the flight path, you could see the high mountain peaks over the Chilkat Glacier, cascading waterfalls surrounding the Ferebee Glacier, or the spectacular “river of ice” known as the Meade Glacier. Upon landing on or near a glacier, an expert guide will answer questions about glacier geologic forces.

Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy Chilkoot Trail Hike & Float Adventure offered by Chilkat Guides. Other excursions are helicopter tours of glaciers, and the  Klondike Rock Climbing & Rappelling excursions

Juneau

The state capital of Alaska offers numerous activities.  There are many exciting sites to see and adventures to undertake.

Popular excursions include a trip to the Mendenhall Glacier , a half-mile wide, 1,800 feet deep ice field.  Other breathtaking activities include a visit to the Mount Roberts Tramway where guests are taken to an observation deck that is approximately 2,000 feet about Juneau.

History seeking cruisers will enjoy the Alaska State Museum, which recounts not only the native people of Alaska and its early settlers, but also the natural wildlife that can be seen throughout the region.   Historic sites include the Saint Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church, the state’s oldest operating church, and the Red Dog Saloon showcase Alaska’s rich mining history.

Ketchikan

The Bering Sea Crab Fisherman’s Tour is a must do family friendly excursion for fishing enthusiasts and seafood lovers. Enjoy an introduction to Alaska’s commercial fishing industry.  Fishermen share amazing stories of the open seas and live catches are brought onboard for a closer view. The vessel is fully modified for passenger comfort and safety.

Other fun family excursions include: the Misty Fjords Seaplane Exploration, Rainforest Canopy & Zipline Expedition , Lighthouse Excursions, and The Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show
