In 2016, Disneyland theme park fans bid a fond farewell to Tower of Terror to be replaced with a new theme! And now it’s official! Disneyland’s Guardians of the Galaxy–Mission: BREAKOUT! opens May 27. Read on for the new ride details featuring legendary Super Heroes and all-new experiences during the “Summer of Heroes.”
Guardians of the Galaxy–Mission: BREAKOUT!
Raise your hand if you were heartbroken (like me) when Disneyland announced last year that Tower of Terror would be replaced. Yeah, it was a tough moment for me. But when chatting with Disney representatives, I was assured that the new Guardians of the Galaxy-Mission: BREAKOUT! ride would be epic!
And ta-dah, announced this week, debuting May 27, the Disneyland’s Guardians of the Galaxy–Mission: BREAKOUT! opens with an exciting line-up of experiences featuring some of your favorite Super Heroes. Best news to me is that legendary Tower of Terror elevator-drop is incorporated into this ride.
More about the Guardians of the Galaxy-Mission: Breakout! Ride
Located in the Disney California Adventure Park, Guardians of the Galaxy–Mission: BREAKOUT! transports guests straight into the “Guardians of the Galaxy” story for the first time, joining characters from the blockbuster films and comics.
Guests “ride” through the fortress-like museum of the mysterious Collector, who is keeping his newest acquisitions, the Guardians of the Galaxy, as prisoners. Board a gantry lift (ah-ha, is this the elevator drop!?!) to be launched into the ride’s daring adventure. Join Rocket’s attempts to bust his pals out of the Collector’s Fortress. Along the way, guests experience randomized ride thrills complete with new visual and audio effects. Of course, the sound bytes will be music inspired by the popular film soundtracks.
Summer of Heroes Adventure Included
Also, launching in 2017 with the Guardians of the Galaxy-Mission BREAKOUT! ride is Disneyland’s Summer of Heroes and its new, year-round experiences.
“It’s going to be a thrilling summer at the Disneyland Resort,” said David Duffy, Director, Creative Entertainment. “You can celebrate the arrival of Guardians of the Galaxy–Mission BREAKOUT! and join forces with legendary Super Heroes. You can choose an awesome encounter with Star-Lord, Black Widow, Spider-Man, Hawkeye or Captain America, step up to meet Groot for the first time, and find out if you have what it takes to join the Avengers. It’s all part of the adventure with Summer of Heroes.”
According to the press release (2/15/17), Disneyland is dubbing May 27 through Sept. 10, the Summer of Heroes, with limited time attractions to celebrate the new ride. For a limited time, take part in:
- Avengers Training Initiative – Black Widow and Hawkeye assemble young recruits for a series of tests to see if they have what it takes to join the ranks of the Avengers.
- Heroic Encounter: Black Widow will arrive on the scene several times throughout the day in an armored Avengers vehicle for her heroic encounter with park guests.
- Grab a Piece (or Bite) of the Action – All that heroism making you hungry? Want a token as proof of your adventures when you get home? Special themed merchandise and food will be available throughout Hollywood Land.
In addition to the Guardians of the Galaxy-Mission: BREAKOUT!, new year-round experiences will also debut during Summer of Heroes including:
Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Dance Off! – Star-Lord will fire up his old-school boom box to get a party started. Everyone is bound to get in the groove and show off their moves during this awesome rock ‘n’ roll bash!
Super Hero Encounters – For the first time, citizens of Earth will come face-to-face with tree-of-few-words Groot, one of the Guardians of the Galaxy! They may also encounter the First Avenger, Captain America, and everyone’s favorite web slinger, your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.
More Fun at Disneyland Park in Summer 2017
Summer of 2017 also heralds the return of the Disneyland Railroad and Rivers of America attractions. Returning later in the summer is the “Fantasmic!” nighttime spectacular. Dates for the return of these classic attractions will be announced soon.
And don’t forget! The last chance for guests to enjoy the classic Main Street Electrical Parade during its limited-time return to Disneyland will be Sunday, June 18.
