Holland comes into full bloom in the spring and there’s no better place to enjoy it than at Keukenhof. This world-famous flower garden is full of hyacinths, daffodils, orchids and the country’s signature flower, tulips. Located in Lisse just 22 miles from Amsterdam, Keukenhof is perfectly suited for a day trip, and with 79 acres of flowers, fountains and open spaces, the scene is set for a memorable family outing.
Keukenhof has plenty of activities to engage its littlest guests, including a treasure hunt that takes them through the entire park teaching them about the different types of flowers, and how they grow from bulbs to flowers, a playground with an elaborate jungle gym and a petting zoo with everything from chicks and bunnies to a llama and a donkey. While my children enjoyed all of these activities, it was the labyrinth and giant skipping stones on the water that they found most entertaining.
Tulips aren’t the only typically Dutch thing you’ll find at Keukenhof. The garden’s Windmill Square is home to a windmill that dates from 1892. There is a daily lecture by a miller explaining how the windmill works and when there is enough wind the mill is run. While you’re at Windmill Square by sure to visit the wooden shoemaker and to have your picture taken standing inside the giant wooden shoes. Bikes are also available to rent allowing you to tour the surrounding area blanketed with tulip fields.
Keukenhof is open March 24 to May 20 daily from 8am – 7:30pm.
