Hong Kong has endless choices for where to stay and play on your family vacation. Mui Wo on Lantau Island is a smallish village that has great beaches, plenty to do and eat and ferry and bus service to wherever else you want to visit.
We stayed with a friend “off road” in the jungle, but there are many options of where to stay, such as the Silvermine Bay Resort. Because it is a small village, nothing is very far from the transportation hub (unless you are staying in the aforementioned jungle!). The beaches greet you as soon as you arrive and even on busy days are not overly crowded–but the barbecue spot usually is. The beaches are also relatively clean and life guarded and sometimes you will see wild buffalo wandering around.
In town in Mui Wo, there is a decent Wellcome supermarket and a plethora of restaurants. The favorite of my kids and mine was Bombay Café, which makes excellent curry. Right at the ferry port there is China Bear and The Kitchen, which serve standard fare burgers and pizzas.
The Mui Wo ferry port itself is a key attraction. The ferries take you to Central on Hong Kong island, where there is plenty to do, but from which you can travel to other places like Tsim Sha Tsui. From Mui Wo, you can also do some island hopping. Right at the ferry port too, there are buses going a variety of places, including the fishing village of Tai O.
And Mui Wo is also not too far from the airport, on the same island, and also just down the beach from Hong Kong Disneyland.
