Lake Atitlan in Guatemala is on the list of the top 10 most beautiful places in the world. Trust me, if you come visit, you’ll agree. However, when you travel with kids, the gorgeous views and scenery aren’t enough. After 10 minutes, they get restless and all the energy within them takes over. In these cases, you’ll need a fun idea fast or no one will be happy.

Are Family Friendly Resorts Better than Luxury and Boutique Hotels?

During my last family trip to Lago Atitlan I discovered that staying at a place with kid friendly amenities definitely helps.

Staying at a resort isn’t necessary, there is a little trick that I learned that allows you to enjoy those amenities. You can stay at another hotel but visit a resort for a part of the day to let the kids release the energy while enjoying amazing views and also eating yummy food.

We did just that.

Our lodging at a beautiful two room villa overlooking the lake offered little activities. So I found myself in need to search for a fun option. That’s how I discovered Porta Del Lago Resort. Since our vacation rental didn’t include breakfast I made reservations for breakfast and play time for my kids at the resort. For $10 entrance fee, you get to have fun all day.

To be honest with you, I had a good idea of what to expect. We have spent a lot of hours going to its sister hotel in Antigua Guatemala.

What I didn’t expect was to find more activities for kids in the resort at the lake.

Of course you have the pool with an amazing view. They also have huge chess pieces and checkers that kids can play with outside. There is also a basket ball court, football court and a playground. All of these within their well secured property, where you don’t need to worry about the kids being safe.

A Taste of Traditional Guatemala Food

Another difference between the hotel in Antigua and the one by the lake was the breakfast. In Antigua we have experienced their Breakfast Buffet, at the lake you get to order a la carte. A great thing is that they have a set menu but they are also willing to make special orders. They did one for my son.

Since breakfast is one of my favorite meals of the day, it’s really hard to impress me. But they did something that surprised me. At first I didn’t like that it took a bit longer than normal for the food to come out. But when it did, it made total sense. The dishes were really big.

I usually have my breakfast with bacon and restaurants tend to serve only two tiny pieces. But in this case I got an overflow of bacon I was able to share it with my boys and husband. This made the resort gain extra stars in my book. Plus, it was easy to see that everything was homemade and tasty, nothing canned.

As soon as we all finished our food and before the plates were cleared off the table, my boys were ready for some serious pool time. This allowed my husband and I to chill out looking at the view and digest our meal.

A great way to start the day.
