Visiting my son at college is a new journey for me. He is at school in Miami, a three-hour flight away from our home in Connecticut. My husband and I visited him during Parent’s Weekend and I had a separate opportunity to see him on a business trip.
I knew he could not spend every free minute with us, and he didn’t, but that didn’t stop me from trying. About a week before the first trip I started formulating my Spend More Time with Mom strategy.
I had three key approaches:
- Ply him with food
- Lure him to the beach
- Entice him with hot cars
All three worked.
Food was a big hit. He was happy to ditch the dining hall and go out to eat with us. That turned out to be effective but expensive!
The cool hotel in South Beach with a relaxing pool worked too.
But the biggest hit were the hot cars. I was test driving—which meant he was test-riding– a Cadillac ATS. My boys like cars. The HUD (Heads Up Display) won me some cool points and the spacious luxury interior made our 40 minute traffic-packed commutes much more comfortable.
The Miami Auto Show also was a hit–so much so that he brought four friends. And why not – it showcases luxury vehicles in Million Dollar Alley, a showroom packed with MacLarens, a Pagini, Aston Martins and Lamborghinis.
In another showroom, there is the Cars Meet Art attraction, with a DJ and 10 cars that are the canvas for world class street artists who turn the space into a gallery. The boys also created their own art car creations on touch screen displays, which could be entered into a contest to win various prizes.
I don’t mind sharing my time with my son – his friends are all great boys – in fact, seeing him with a group of his friends feels just like home.
