Dia Adams, Travel Hack TravelingMom

Dia Adams is a Mom of two elementary school kids in the DC Metro area. Between growing up foreign service and working in consulting, she built up a serious love of travel that included visiting over 30 countries and living in Thailand, China, and Ireland (where her son was born). With extensive trial (and occasional error) her family has learned to balance passion for travel with the reality of, well, real life with two kids. Dia blogs at TheDealMommy.com to share hacks that help families travel more while still maintaining their savings and sanity.

A Little Birdie Told Me Where The Best Travel Deals Are Hidden

Only 23 percent of online users are on Twitter. That means 77 percent of you are losing out on the single best source of travel deal information. Today I hope to change that. Where the Deals Are An informal survey of my mom community verified my suspicion: almost all of them love Pinterest, but shy away from Twitter. It’s true, Pinterest is great for planning, dreaming, and organizing your thoughts, but if you want immediate news, such as where to find the best travel deals, Twitter is where it’s at. Twitter, of all social media, is the one most in...

Toys R Us and FAO Schwarz NYC Flagships Closing

Sad news today: Iconic New York City toy store FAO Schwarz is closing its Fifth Avenue location July 15, 2015. This only adds more pain to the recent announcement that the flagship Toys R Us in Times Square shutters at the end of the year. No more Toy Soldiers standing guard at the front door. No more life-sized Big piano. No more fortunes from Zoltar. No more two story tall LEGO T-Rex or King Kong climbing up the Empire State building. No more Holiday Decorations, which always blew us away. Worst of all…no more Ferris wheel. I know we’ll have to get at least one...

Is it Safe for a Family to Travel to Mexico?

When a destination shows up on the evening news, your first reaction may be to stay away. I get it. Why invite trouble? The problem is that entire countries get tarred with a brush only meant for specific towns. Mexico is a prime example. It’s so easy to see terms like “drug cartel” and think “Travel to Mexico? No Way!”. I’m asking you to step outside your comfort zone and look at some facts before tossing out the country with the bath water. The State Department is my first stop when I need to see the on-ground situation in...

The Secret Disney World Dining Discount Program

Disney World has amazing dining options, but it’s not easy to find them cheap. Like Disney Character Warehouse for souvenirs, I’ve found a way to save on the un-save-able: Landry’s Select. Landry’s Select is a secret Disney World dining discount program I use on every trip to Disney World. Landry’s is at heart a restaurant company, owning Morton’s, McCormick and Shmick’s, and Bubba Gump, among others. However, the company also owns Rainforest Cafe, T-Rex Cafe, and Yak and Yeti…including the locations inside Disney World. T-Rex and Rainforest are both in Downtown Disney, Yak and Yeti and another Rainforest Cafe are...

Disney Character Warehouse: Where The Disney World Savvy Shop for Souvenirs

Disney World can feel like one big ATM if you let it. After the tickets, resort rooms, and meals you might not have any left for souvenirs…but I have found a way to save bit at the House of Mouse: Disney Character Warehouse. Two not-so-well promoted outlets owned by Disney have locations practically outside the Disney World gates: Disney’s Character Warehouse 4951 International Drive Orlando (407) 354-3255 Disney’s Character Warehouse 8200 Vineland Avenue, Orlando Premium Outlets – Suite 1252 Orlando (407) 477-0222 The Deal Kids and I hit both recently and found them to be identically stocked…and well worth...

Best Daily Travel Deals for Families

One of my favorite travel hacks started March 23:  flash sales.  For those of you new to the term “travel hacking,” it’s the art of strategically crafting the best in travel and loyalty programs for your benefit. With Daily Getaways, the US Travel Association partners with major travel companies five weeks every spring to release limited quantities of a specific item at 1PM EST every weekday. These cheap vacation deals for families are now available to view. The downside: the best deals sell out faster than a Taylor Swift Concert. As a longtime veteran of the DG wars, I’m here to...
