I thought it was only fitting to write a post for Traveling Mom while I’m at 32,000 feet in the air. Ah, the magic of wi-fi! As part of my national book tour for See Mom Run, presented by Swiffer WetJet, I’ve been traveling across the country visiting the cities where all our contributors reside. Over the next four days, we’ll be hitting Chicago, Los Angeles and Seattle and along the way, we’re going to be sharing all our favorite sites with the readers of Traveling Mom.
For now, what I can tell you is that over the past two weeks I’ve flown on two different air carriers – US Airways and American Airlines and while I normally prefer high tech planes from Jet Blue and Virgin America, there is something to be said about service.
Let me preface this by saying, the flight I took from Charlotte to New York was an unpleasant one – the flight attendants had obviously had a bad day and unfortunately, they took out their frustrations on the passengers – telling us to hurry up or we wouldn’t take off on time; and sighing heavily when on unsuspecting traveler didn’t have her seat upright when the plane wasn’t taking off.
Plus, on that flight, I had placed my laptop in the seat next to me, not realizing that we were in for a hard landing. The next thing I knew, my laptop went careening through the aisles and landed several rows in front of me. Lucky for me, my projectile Mac Book didn’t injure anyone and it’s still in great working condition.
Fast forward to today. I couldn’t sleep at all last night because I knew I had to get up at 4 am to catch a 6:30 am flight. Making matters worse, the howling wind and driving rain scared the beejezus out of me. Why is it that when I decide to travel there’s always a storm brewing nearby.
Anyway, my car was waiting for me and while the driver didn’t really know the roads too well, we held our own and flew to Laguardia Airport – the winds literally pushed us there.
I arrived to a sea of people. Who knew that airports were bustling at 4:45 am but if you want to find out where all the crowds are, just visit a metro airport and you’ll track them down. I dragged my luggage, here, there and everywhere, paid $50 extra for the privilege of checking in my bags; bought a coffee with a bum lid, a yogurt parfait and then waited to board the plane.
To keep myself occupied, I logged onto my computer and miraculously, was connected to the Internet. Thanks to Verizon wireless who provided me with a free wi-fi connection during my book tour, I can now blog practically everywhere…I’m sure you’re all thrilled about that.
We finally got on the plane and I’m sitting in the way back. But actually, that’s pretty good – I’m right next to the friendliest stewardess I’ve ever met and she’s more than happy to give us all the coffee we want on our ride to Chicago. Sure we don’t have breakfast like the folks in first class, but at least I’m being treated well, nobody is muttering nasty things about me under their breath and I can honestly say, I think the stewardesses on this flight love their job.
Which leads me to my next point. Despite all the advances in technology, I have to say that service goes a long way in my book. I will sooner book a flight with a friendly staff than suffer through an impersonal plane ride with flight attendants who obviously don’t like their jobs.
As my journey continues, I’ll continue offering my tidbits from the air, rails and roads (cruising around in L.A. this weekend in a Jetta provided by Volkswagen) so will share how my travels go real soon!
