Taking Kids to Paris
Paris is known for romance, but it could just as easily be known for family travel. From crazy, cool carousels and private scavenger hunts in the Louvre to youth cooking classes in elegant hotels, here are the 10 best things to do in Paris with kids.

Jardin de Tuileries
During the summer months, the Jardin de Tuileries turns into a kids’ paradise, thanks to an amusement park filled with trampolines, marionette shows and a Ferris wheel that offers a superb view of the city. Two of the finest art museums in Paris flank the park: the contemporary Musée du Jeu de Paume and the Musée de l’Orangerie, which houses Monet’s celebrated Water Lilies.
A visit to the Louvre is essential, and an interactive approach keeps kids entertained. Paris Muse offers Paris Muse Clues: A Family Tour for Young Treasure Hunters, a two-hour treasure hunt through the museum that sharpens detective skills through observation.
Palais de la Decouverte
The Palais de la Decouverte enchants science buffs with exhibits about chemistry, astronomy, geoscience and mathematics. Oh, and it’s actually housed within an ancient French palace. Another wonderful French science museum, Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie, is the biggest in Europe!
Small children will go mad for this old-fashioned French amusement park in Bois de Boulogne. The outdoor space features a house of mirrors, archery range, puppet shows, playground and waffle stalls.
The Eiffel Tower tops everyone’s list.
TravelingMom tip: Drop by La Grande Epicerie at the Bon Marche, Paris’ grand food court, to scoop up fruits, vegetables, meats and cheeses. Then, take a gander at the monument while enjoying a picnic at the Parc du Champ de Mars. If you must go to the top, be in the line by 8:30 am or you will be waiting all day.
TravelingMom Tip: One of our favorite things to do when taking a vacation is to hire a photographer for family photos. This is a special gift and souvenir that we cherish. We use Flytographer to book a local photographer located in the area that we're traveling to. Use this link and you will get $25 off your photo session.
Boat Ride on the Seine
A narrated one-hour open air “Bateaux Mouches” boat ride on the Seine is an ideal way to see the city’s iconic monuments including the grand Cathedral of Notre Dame. Or, board a water taxi and use the River Seine as your tour guide. The hop-on, hop-off Batobus makes eight stops at landmark attractions, including the Eiffel Tower and Champs Élysées.
Eat a Macaron
Macarons are to Paris what cupcakes are to America. The can’t-miss version is served in the form of a full tea at Laduree at the Rue Bonaparte location.
Shop at a Flea Market
Visiting the Paris street and flea markets is my absolute favorite activity. A treasure trove for souvenirs for kids and parents, it’s fun to peruse old French books, coins, toys and super chic accoutrements for the house. (And, on the cheap!).
Ride a Funicular
The city’s turn-of-the-century bohemian spirit is still vibrant in Montmartre. Take the funicular up to the Basilica of Sacre Coeur, the highest point in Paris, France.

Take a Youth Cooking Class
The newly revamped Ritz Hotel offers 2-hour cooking classes for teens, children 6-11 and parent/child duos at its legendary Ecole Ritz Escoffier. You do not need to be a hotel guest to enroll.
TravelingMom tip: Taxis in Paris are exorbitant. Make a game out of taking the far less expensive Metro. The always-entertaining cast of characters, at the platforms–jugglers, musicians and sketch artists–add to the city’s enchantment.
Beyond the City: Day Trips from Paris
If your vacation in Paris extends beyond a few days, add one or more day trips to kid-friendly destinations. Getting to Disneyland Paris is super easy. The Disneyland Paris Express leaves the city from 4 different locations in the morning, arriving at the park around 10:00 a.m., and departs for the return at 10:00 p.m..
The Palace of Versailles is a wonderful place to explore as a family. Fat Bike Tours offers full day excursions so you can explore the 2000+ acre property as well as the famous Hall of Mirrors. And Monet’s Garden at Giverny is another easy day trip.
