Twitter Recap: Healthy Travel

by

medical-kitTravel is great for your brain, but it can be bad for your body–from the guy coughing in the seat behind you on the airplane to the overly rich food you indulge in to the jet lag caused by time changes. But it doesn’t have to be that way. How do you stay healthy when you travel? What are the healthiest trips you have taken? We came together on January 14th to chat about coughing seatmates to the flu and airsickness.

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT MEDICAL TOURISM? WOULD YOU DO IT?

@CarmelLeeMooney took my youngest Bethesda, MD for a treatment. And mid child to SF for one.

@kimorlando Costa Rica has a million dentists. I hv friends there. Full set of braces +$300. Here cost is $6000. Tempting

@djc319 Not for me !I’d rather be near family if I have a procedure done.Even if it’s really cheap

@PaulEisenberg For med tourism overseas, you def want to find an accredited place.

WHAT’S YOUR SECRET FOR STAYING HEALTHY WHEN YOU TRAVEL?

@mimitravelz wash/sanitize hands 20 times a day. Neurotic.

@thegeekwife As soon as I check into a room I Lysol everything anyone else could have touched in the room & I carry sanitizer everywhere!

@tibstravel Keep basic med supplies in suitcase; can’t count on pharmacy access

@FamilyFriendlyX Probiotics. I swear by them and you can get them for kids too.

WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOUR PLANE SEATMATE STARTS COUGHING?

@simplyandreah try to stay out of their air space as much as possible. don’t touch things they do.

@mellanhead when I get off plane I hose myself down with lysol. Lol

@6anderson1world Cough drops and kleenex. Both get passed on down. Without touching ;)

@erodg I tell myself that this is not MY time to get sick.

HOW DO YOU ENJOY FOOD WHEN YOU TRAVEL WITHOUT GAINING WEIGHT?

@sweetmatcha eat more veggies and fruits, drink a lot of water!

@simplyandreah Eat high-fat foods in moderation. Enjoy smaller portion sizes.

@furrykarma I don’t and just cut down before and after

@tomhestonmd I generally do not try to diet when on vacation. I just eat light because new foods sometimes can cause upset.

@mommytravels Travel to a place where you hate the food.

SHARE YOUR WORST SICK WHEN TRAVELING STORY.

@erodg My worst sick when traveling: altititude sickness Arequipa, Peru. Brutal! New Year’s Eve – constant whistle blowing!

@kymri Intestinal parasite from India, sick 3 months following and lost 15 pounds. Finally cured with probiotics from Naturopath.

@CammiLH I think ours have only been jelly fish stings! Yuck!

@furrykarma Once had a blister get infected in Mexico and had to go to local doctor (in a hut) to get a shot in the butt.

@kymri Q5 reminds me of another possible response to Q4: pick up an intestinal parasite = major weight loss!

@Kidprojectorg Two kids puking in the backseat on road trip. Ziplock Tupperware very handy.

Which morphed into a talk about sick folks and housekeeping-

@Go2Kauai
I try not to leave my germs around but i do hope they wash sheets with hot water

@sweetmatcha i feel for housekeeping

HOW DO YOU FIND GOOD MEDICAL CARE WHEN YOU’RE OUT OF TOWN?

@judy511 we got pediatrician by asking at a playground

@6anderson1world Out of Country? Go to the fanciest, most $ hotel you can find and ask for referral.

@tomhestonmd In U.S. generally urgent care centers very good. Abroad I look for a U.S. or European med clinic. Is the doc certified?

@mommytravels find a US military base if you need to. They’re everywhere.

@maryheston As a parent good to be trained in CPR / basic First Aid
