Door of San Miguel de Allende

Continuing with the theme of architectural detail, Mexico provides countless opportunities to capture a story of the place in a single shot. San Miguel de Allende is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as being a mecca for artists from all over the world. Carved wood doors are characteristic of this part of Mexico, and I found that cropping just a portion, instead of photographing the entire door, serves not only to represent the place, but also makes the photograph a work of art in itself. Family Travel and Safety--Do You Worry Enough?

FamilyFun TravelingMom
Should we worry more about safety while we travel?
ziplineMy family travels all over and I seldom worry about their safety beyond a car accident in bad weather or getting separated at a crowded location.  I try not to “go there”, especially on vacation.  But maybe that’s when I should worry most.

Chinese New Year: Year of the Dragon

Chinese New Year: Year of the Dragon 2012, as symbolized in this tile screen at the Forbidden City in Beijing.
TMOM01.22.12CHINAdragon

The Chinese New Year begins this week on January 23rd.  In Chinese astrology, each year of a 12-year cycle is represented by a different animal, and 2012 brings the Year of the Dragon. The dragon is the only mythical animal of the Chinese zodiac, and is a symbol of strength, power, and good luck. Thus, a dragon year is a popular year to have babies! This photo is of one of the dragons found on the Nine-Dragon Screen at the Forbidden Palace in Beijing, marking the entrance to the residence of the Empress during the Ming Dynasty. Here again, choosing to zoom in and photograph a detail, rather than the entire wall, makes for a stronger photo, telling a story of China in one shot. Photo by Kymri Wilt of Miraterra Images

Why My Kids Love DIA -- Denver International Airport

Idaho TravelingMom
denver-airportEvery year, we go to Boulder, Colorado to visit my in-laws.  One of the best parts of the voyage, for my kids, is the subway/tram at the Denver Airport.  The kids are now conditioned to go to the front of the train so that they can get the best seats.  Right up front.
