This year, I am making all the usual resolutions: lose ten pounds, be more patient with my kids, write, eat healthy. Blah blah Blah. But I'm also making Travel Resolutions that will help anyone planning to travel in 2011 and beyond.
1. No more overpacking. Do you really need three different pairs of heels for a one-week trip? How about one pair, in a neutral color? If everyone is looking at your feet, you need to worry anyway.
2. No more over-traveling. On my last trip, I estimated my travel time to be about 55 hours overall. True, 36 of those hours were coming and going, but the other 19? Internal travel. No more. I'm going to spend time in one place and enjoy it. No more "if it's Tuesday it must be Brussels" for me.
3. No more carry-ons filled with kid activities. No matter what I bring on a trip, my kids either watch TV or play electronics. I have Travel Monopoly, Travel Sorry, card games, Klutz games, travel activity books. Our last plane trip was 16 hours. Guess how many of those things got played with? None. Crayons. Pad. DS. Done.
4. No more endless snacks. Just like the games don't get played, these don't get eaten -- except by me. Not good. Not good at all.
5. More going with the flow. Travel should be an adventure, not a perfectly (ok, neurotically) planned trip. This year, I resolve to relax on trips, and see what happens.
6. More sleeping in. Even if we are visiting some place great and I want to see everything, it's still vacation, and sometimes, a lazy morning in the hotel is the just the thing to make it feel that way.
7. More day trips. Since we live in NY, there's a lot to do here. But it's important to leave the city sometimes, too. Even if it's just for the day.
And there you have it. Seven resolutions to make this year's travel, the best travel ever.
Happy Traveling, and Happy 2011!
