Reading is extremely important to our family. My children have been listening to their English teacher mama read them stories since before they were born. We have story time almost every night and during quiet time they will often choose a book to read over playing with a toy.
Before we travel, I always make a trip to the library or bookstore to pick up books that mention our destination. We read Misty of Chincoteague by Marguerite Henry as a family at night before we headed to Chincoteague, Virginia. They were so excited to see some of Misty’s relatives while we were there! When we were headed to London, we read Paddington Bear books.
Before we went to Germany, we read Disney’s Sleeping Beauty to prepare for our trip to Neuschwanstein Castle, which inspired Disney’s Sleeping Beauty Castle. My daughter could barely believe her eyes when she saw a real castle up on the hill covered in snow. When we traveled to a city much larger than ours, we read The Little House by Virginia Lee Burton so many times the cover ripped off of it. When we knew we were going to be riding the rails through Europe, we read every Thomas the Train book we could get our hands on as well as The Little Engine That Could by Watty Piper, and The Polar Express (it was Christmastime when we went!)
Before we headed to the San Antonio Zoo, my son’s favorite book of the week was Verdi by Janell Canon. Verdi is about a little yellow snake who does not want to grow up to be the big green lazy snake looped around a tree. Imagine my son’s delight when he found a big green lazy snake looped around a tree in the reptile area!
When we took our Florida born and raised children to see snow for the first time, we read books like Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats and before we traveled down the road for blueberries, we read Blueberries for Sal by Robert McCloskey. A House for Hermit Crab by Eric Carle is usually the favorite pick for the night before we are headed to the beach.
Reading can get your children excited about their destination and there is nothing better than when your child points out something they read about before they traveled! Don’t forget to read books for yourself also!
