Seeking a gentle vacation on Maui

Ask a Traveling Mom

Any advice for a road weary mom with slight mobility challenges?  Seeking beautiful experience on Maui and looking for a great place to stay.   Can't hike due to recent surgery but can enjoy the sunrise, sunset and island tranquility.

P.S. no kids this trip -- newly empty nesters on a re-honeymoon :)

THX!

What side of the island will you be on? It makes a difference in what I would suggest. I lived on Maui for a short while and it has so many great gems to explore.

Since you are already road weary, picking your lodging will require some thought. Do you think you will get in the water or do you prefer to gaze out at the ocean?

Budget?

I was just thinking that you mentioned you can't go Hiking. Take the DRIVE up Haleakala crater. You can feel like you've hiked to the top of the clouds without the work and the visitors centers at the top are easily accesible for anyone. I always think of this stuff while I travel, thinking of my neighbor who is a war veteran missing a leg. How would HE get to here or there. Makes me wonder sometimes :o)

I just got back from my "re-honeymoon" 10yr trip in Maui also and we found an amazing condo in Kihei that was on the 4th floor with great views, close to the elevator and easy handicap access. I wrote about this condo on my personal site and if you are looking for a great deal contact the owner Gina who as a couple properties and tell her Crystal sent you! VIEW the condo & info here -> http://bit.ly/9lV6JX

I like the sunset view from the Wailea area. The luxury hotels there are a cut above Kaanapali. And then if you have time you can drive out to the Makena area where there are some fabulous beaches steps away from the parking lot (Big Beach). There are tons of ideas in the guidebook called Maui Trailblazer. It has maps and pictures that will give you a good idea what's in store for you. Happy vacation Mama!

Any of the hotels in Kaanapali are fantastic, located near first class beaches shops and restaurants all in the same place. It's only a short car ride to Lahaina Town (Front Street) or up north to Kapalua.

If you are wanting to splurge, The Ritz Carlton up in Kapalua is amazing, tranquil and they have carts to bring you down to the beach if needed. It can be a bit cooler in Kapalua where there's a mixture of Palm Trees and Pines around the grounds.

You could also head over to the island of Lanai for a few days for some true rest and relaxation. Four Seasons Manele Bay is nothing short of amazing and is only a 45 minute ferry ride from Lahaina Harbor. They have gorgeous gardens throughout the hotel with a tranquil pool, spa and the customer service is top notch.
