Where to Stay Near Orlando?

Ask a Traveling Mom

We are making an unexpected trip to the Orlando area this month and need to find a place for two families to stay for three nights. Each family will have two adults and two kids over the age of 10. We need something affordable but nice. Any recommendations?

There is a surplus of places to stay in Orlando so remember to offer the price you want to pay, you might be surprised!

We are staying here right now and I can highly recommend. We are staying in a two room condo with three bed and a pull out couch. Be sure to request a remodeled unit! Military travel mom

On our last Disney weekend, we stayed at the Sheraton Vistana Village (http://www.starwoodvacationownership.com/sheraton_vistana_villages/welcome.jsp). We received a timeshare gift from a family member so I can't testify to it but I believe the prices are reasonable from what I have read. This has probably been our favorite stay. We have also stayed in the Disney sports hotel and have stayed in a few hotels in Kissimmee...the Ramada Gateway (http://www.ramadagateway.com/) was one. I do recommend that if you choose this hotel that you spend the extra few bucks to stay in the tower which is newer than the rest of the hotel.

I'm going to agree with EastCoastTravel Mom, but go you one better. I suggest trying http://www.HomeAway.com -- it's a fabulous way to find your "home away from home." You can use their search engine to narrow your search for specific number of bedrooms and price ranges. The site also includes reviews of the lodging, which is all privately owned. Check it out -- I think you'll agree!

We stay outside of Orlando often, and our preference is to rent a vacation villa. You can get one for each family, or even get one big enough for the entire party. We did a family reunion there last year...four families in a huge villa with three master suites...it was a blast.

Anyway, to find a villa, just google "vacation villas orlando." We like VRBO (vacation rentals by owner), Villas Direct and All-Star Vacation Homes, but there are many out there. Some let you post a general inquiry specifying what you're looking for, and the villa owners will contact you with details.

I like having space to spread out (with five kids, it's a must!) plus having our own private pool and a washer/dryer. The homes have game rooms, huge televisions and nice theming - all for the price of adjoining hotel rooms. You can't beat that!

I don't have a specific hotel recommendation, but I would definitely recommend that you look for a condo with at least three bedrooms--one for each couple and the third for the kids.
The condo will come with a full kitchen so you can save a bundle on meals just by stocking up on cereal and milk for breakfast and sandwich stuff for lunch. If you're really frugal, you can even boil a big pot of spaghetti for dinner.
The condo rental might seem expensive at first, but when you split the cost with the other family and factor in the food savings, it could end up being far cheaper than a hotel.

Unfortunatley my own personal experience with Orlando has only been Disneyworld, which is fabulous but definately not a frugal choice in this case.
My only advice is to use a travel website, my preference is Expedia; put in your dates, amount of people and choose the star level you consider "nice". I did quick search for June and the first thing that popped up was a 3 1/2 star, for $99 a night (per room). One or two bedroom villas, with nice granite full kitchens, which will save you money on food!
If price is the MOST important, be sure to sort by Price. In that case hotels came up for $41 a night, but not sure who's "nice" it would cover. :o)
GOOD LUCK in your search ~ NorthwestTMOM
