My Take On The Disney Disability Access Service Pass

I have been thinking about the new Disney Disability Access Service Pass since I heard the rumors. Now that  the official statement is out, I’d like to share my thoughts. Keep in mind that the new pass has not gone into effect yet. It does on October 9th.

The Guest Assistance Pass has been a lifesaver for me each time I visit Disney World. I use a scooter and have multiple chronic illnesses, which cause me to fatigue and weaken easily. I cannot be in the sun and heat for a long period of time. With that pass, I was able to use an attraction’s handicapped entrance, or go the front of the line if needed.

If I feel well enough, I do not take advantage of the pass because I don’t need it. Logical, right? Well, I believe that one of the main reasons for the change to the new Disney Disability Access Service Pass is because of visitors who abused the system. In fact, Disney has used this statement to back up the change:

Given the increasing volume of requests Disney receives for special access to our attractions, we are changing our process beginning Oct. 9 so that it creates a more consistent experience for all our Guests while providing accommodations for Guests with disabilities.

In a nutshell, the new pass will allow access to attractions similar to their Fast Pass system. Instead of entering towards the front of the line, a time frame is provided for you to return to the attraction.

This situation alone has me concerned. Planning for attraction times is extremely difficult when you can’t plan your body acting up. For example, I may have more energy during the Jungle Cruise and then need to rest or return to the hotel. Another issue is the time element this waiting causes for a guest to be in the heat and the sun. I have concerns about how this will effect special needs children.

As a Disney fan, who visits the parks often, I am waiting to hear if any updates will be made after October 9th as guests use the new pass. Perhaps, surveys and other forms of feedback will enable Disney to hear from those of us that depend on the use of the Disability pass.
