Here are six free things to do in Providence, R.I., on your next family vacation.
1. Picnic at Roger William Park. www.rogerwilliamsparkzoo.org/ Open year round at 1000 Elmwood Ave. Includes a handicapped-accessible playground.
2. Providence Children’s Museum. www.childrenmuseum.org/ Free from 5 to 8 p.m. on MetLife Family Friday. Best for kids, ages 5 – 11. Open the third Friday of the month from September - May, then every Friday night during June, July and August.
3. RISD Museum. http://www.risdmuseum.org/ Free on the last Saturday of the month. A variety of hands-on workshops, performances, videos and special gallery quests throughout the day. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
4. Home Depot Kids’ How-To Clinics. www.homedepot.com/ Free for children ages 5-12 on the first Saturday of every month between 10:00 a.m. and noon at all Home Depot stores. Children accompanied by an adult construct projects from pre-fabricated kits. The kits are designed to be both educational and practical.
5. Waterfire. http://www.waterfire.org/ Spring – early fall in downtown Providence. Stroll around the city’s multi-sensory art installation, highlighted by a series of bonfires installed on the three rivers of downtown Providence.
6. Gallery Night. www.gallerynight.info/index.html Third Thursday of the month from March through November at galleries around town. A free bus loops throughout the city and stops at participating galleries, art shops and museums.
