6 free things to do in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, on your next family vacation

Located 40 minutes due east of Spokane International Airport, Coeur d’Alene is one giant outdoor playground, with several free attraction to make it an affordable family vacation destination. It is best known for the world famous Coeur d’Alene Golf  Resort’s floating green, the northwest’s largest theme  park (Silverwood Theme Park) and Boulder Beach Water Park.

The town attracts travelers seeking a peaceful and affordable family vacation. 

1. Follow the Mudgy & Millie Trail or check out tje Mudgy & Millie Site - Based on the children’s storybook by bestselling Coeur d’Alene author Susan Nipp, the  hide-and-seek game depicted in the book takes form in the real  world as a  public art project. Follow Mudgy Moose as he searches for his friend Millie Mouse through downtown Coeur d’Alene. The trail begins at the base of Tubbs Hill and concludes at Independence Point, where Mudgy  discovers that Millie was hiding close by all along.
 
2. Play in and around Lake Coeur d’Alene - More than 25 miles long, the lake has 135 miles of quiet coves, tree-lined shores and sandy beaches. The lake can be experienced along various parks and trails. 

3. Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes - Ride part of the 72-mile paved bike trail on Union Pacific Railroad right of way through beautiful scenery in mountains, valleys and along lakes. 
 
4. Art Walk - On the second Friday of each month, the art galleries host opening receptions with the opportunity to meet the artists, listen to live music and see newly arrived works  of art, all  within easy strolling distance. Participating downtown businesses and restaurants are open extended hours and 2-hour parking is always free.
 
5.  Art on the Green - Hundreds of booths, children's hands-on-art  projects and "clothes line" art collections. This weekend is one of the largest in town with approximately 40,000 people attending this event along with The Downtown Street Fair. A free shuttle bus runs between the three venues with stops on 3rd and 4th streets and Sherman Avenue (buses arrive about every 30  minutes). Location: North Idaho College Campus. July 31-Aug. 2.  Friday, Noon-8 p.m., Saturday, 10 a.m.-8 p.m. and Sunday  10 a.m.-5 p.m.
 
6. Coeur d’Alene Wooden Boat Festival - One of   Coeur d'Alene's most popular summer events, the festival features a spotlight on wooden boats, food vendors and entertainment. Aug. 22-23.
