History Hero: An App That Saves Kids from Boredom

History Hero app

History Hero is an app designed to bring history to life for children and their families during their family travel and sightseeing experiences.  File this app under must-have travel aids because it is a useful tool when you have a bored child.

You start the game by choosing your hero.  Thankfully, the choice of heroes cover a variety of races and genders because kids are more engaged when they relate to their character– you can even choose a robot.  What I liked about this app is that it features heroes not superheroes.  The female characters are not just pretty faces but are realistically intelligent and include an astronaut, firefighter, photographer and a spProductReviewecial government agent.

The game has three difficulty levels: one for ages 4-7 (with an adult’s help), one for ages 8-12 and one for teenagers and adults.  I had the opportunity to test out the 8-12 level and for my nine year old it was perfect.  The goal of the game is to find and record data about important historical and cultural sites before the bad guys (aliens call the Erasers) destroy them.

For our mission at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, we had fifteen artifacts to find.  This aspect is the challenge and the fun.  History and heroes aside, the game helps with developing important learning skills like following directions (navigational and reading), reading comprehension and vocabulary.  The history of art and the world is an added bonus.  We found twelve in about an hour and a half, with a few side diversions, before my phone died (mommy fail).  The app is task driven and gives a sense of purpose to what is usually a meandering experience.  I was surprised at how focused my daughter was at completing the tasks and there was not one, “I am bored” or “can we go home?”

Currently, the app has a choice of three museums in NYC.  Each mission is available for in-app download for $4.99 and includes all three levels so when your kids get tired of the easier levels they can try the teen level.

It is also available for:

Developed by Mind Gamez LLC, History Hero is designed for Apple operating systems, and is available for download in the Apple App Store.  Word on the street is that the Android version of History Hero will be available later this summer.
