Healthy snacking on the go

pearsParents know the importance of bringing snacks along when traveling.  Whether it's a car ride, a plane ride, or just waiting for an appointment, snacks are a good thing.  If you don't plan ahead, your healthy options might be limited.  Think of packing items that are portable, small, and mess-free.

Healthy eating doesn't have to mean boring.  Here are some super nutritious snacks that will keep your children munching and happy on trips:

1.  Nuts- are loaded with protein and healthy fats.  (Be aware that some people are allergic)
2.  Fresh Fruit (pick ones that aren't too messy, such as an apple)
3.  Dried Friut (whatever you and your children like -we prefer apricots and goji berries)
4.  Seeds-(I love "Go Raw Pumpkin Seeds")
5.  Raw cookies (yes, I said raw! "Go Raw" makes tasty little cookies such as ginger snaps made from coconut, sesame seeds, dates, and ginger) They are yummy, gluten free, and low in sugar.
6.  Soybeans- I buy the organic shelled frozen soybeans and then just cook them for a few minutes. They taste great warm or cold.
7.  Veggies Swords- Cut up your child's favorite raw vegetables, such as carrots, celery, and cucumbers in long thin strips and call them swords.  Also, Costco has little mini hummus containers that are perfect for dipping and travel well.
8.  String cheese- or cheese alternative for protein, calcium, and vitamin D
9.  Whole grain crackers- there are many varieties that my daughter likes that can be bought at a healthfood store
10. Yummy Earth Lollipops- No, candy isn't healthy but yummy earth makes an organic lollipop.  I always travel with a few.  It may come in handy when your plane is taking off and landing and the swallowing helps to prevent ear pressure.

strawberry* Don't forget to pack plenty of water and other fluids.  Also, pack more than one item because children can change their mind a lot and having a variety is always better.

Healthy Travels!
