Recently, my little man had the honor of being a ring bearer in a family wedding in the Austin, Texas area. We packed our bags for a weekend of celebration and fun with the family. During our free time we had the opportunity to explore the Guadalupe River in New Braunfels and Gruene, Texas. If you are ever in the area you must make time for a pit stop to Gruene. Austin and San Antonio may get all the good press for the area, but the historical charm of Gruene cannot be matched in the big city.

Antique shops, local stores with products you cannot find in the city and a view of the river. What's not to like? The highlight of our day, by far, was lunch at the Gruene River Grill.

From the rock pathway, flowers and fountains leading to the entrance to the beautiful, rustic decor inside, the Gruene River Grill is charming, relaxing and homey. We had our meal on the covered patio outside overlooking the Guadalupe River. Live music drifted across the river from another local establishment and even my energetic toddler was relaxed and content to enjoy the views and sounds.

Everything we ordered: margaritas, shrimp wontons, talapia -- was absolutely wonderful. The staff was welcoming, friendly and efficient. It was the best restaurant I've visited in a very long time.

In the midst of the hustle and bustle of a busy family wedding, Gruene and the Gruene River Grill gave us a moment to relax, breathe and enjoy the first days of Spring in Texas.

Plan a little detour on your next trip to the Austin area. You won't be disappointed.
